I’m building a 24x28 cabin, single level . The foundation is cement block
8x8x16 the wood I’m using is pine .it will have a triple support beam running through the middle with 3 pillars 16x16 sq on the longest side.
Giving me 12 foot long joist each side of center. My question is this

Can I use 2x8s at 16” apart or would it be 2x10s

#2 SPF in 2x8, 16" oc, Assuming an L/360 deflection limit and 40/10 live/dead loading, yes, 12'3" would be OK with 2x8s.

AAAAARGH! Minimum code. Span tables! Gosh I hate them.

I am always reminded of a quote by Mike Holmes (Canadian TV star and renovator):

"Minimum code is the absolute minimum material you need in order for your house not to collapse or fall over".

If minimum code calls for 2x8, use 2x10. What is the difference in price? Less than half a buck each? Build it better than you need and it will last longer than you think.

kemp , it’s not a Minimum code it’s a Standard code and if you build your cabin to that standard you will have a fine cabin .
