Hello,
I want to buy a miter saw. Theres a lot of them available with a huge range of prices. So, I don't need the greatest one ever made, but I also don't want cheap garbage. I want a saw that will perform for a long time without breaking the bank. Are there any good brands you recommend?
Thank you!

I've been using my dads Milwaukee for about 20 years. It's still going strong, but it's small. It won't handle a 6" board without flipping it over and cutting the other side.
He bought us a Mastercraft (I think) sliding compound this year for our camp. It's been running great, has some nice features and was inexpensive. Best of all, it will easily cut a 2x10 in one pass. The laser guide is kind of useless in any type of daylight. The side extensions are great for supporting longer boards, and you can set the depth which was handy for making our ladder. All in all I'm quite happy with it. I can post a picture of it this weekend.

I have about 4-5 right now, and although Makita or Bosch might be better, I find for the price that the Ridgid brand is fine. Or Hitachi.
And you can cut a 1 x 6 by just raising it slightly at the end of the cut. If you need to cut 1 x 12's etc...you really should get a sliding saw, or if you're going to cut a lot of crown, you might want to get a 12" saw with a higher fence...depends how you cut your crown....

Get a 12", if you do 45, you find smaller ones wont cut everything. I think Home Depots Ridgid is a great value. I would get the compound sliding miter, in case I do a hip roof.

Yes, Ridgid is good, I had 3, just gave 1 to another contractor buddy. Not Makita quality though....I miss my old 12" slider, sold it mainly because to was too heavy for my old back.

BTW, if anyone wants a really good slider that is space efficient, Bosch has a new model that you can use right up against a wall.
