I would happily use pine shavings.
Let me update my earlier bokashi post:

I have been using a bokashi blend of horse bedding (pine shavings) wetted with the bokashi blend.

One: It works very well. Digests the material exceptionally quickly.

Two: I used it in a 5 gallon bucket toilet. And in a composting toilet (envirolet). In both cases it reduced mass and odour. Odour to none. And managing pre-digested material is far more relaxed than handling ... well. You know.

I have to say I'm delighted with the results. Makes waste mgt so much easier. Safer too.

For more info and a how-to-make see the blog posts I wrote here.

Hey, I know this is an old thread but wanted to add my 2 cents and give a big thumbs up to the BoonJon C-head composting toilet.
I bought ours over a year ago and didn't get it in and start using it until about 6 weeks ago.
So far so good, I purposely left our waste in it for a week and when we came back there was no smell. It's simple, easy and I'd buy it again...

I bought this cabin which already has a really nice outhouse and some kind of chemical ports potty in the cabin. I'm gonna use the bucket/sawdust/composting system. figure no need to let the govt know and if they ever come around and get curious, I'll just point at the outhouse and camping type toilet.

Sorry for viewing this post so late.

Its happy to read your question and your are inclination towards the composting toilet.

Discharging your feces into the septic tank may cost a lot of dollar for attaching it to the septic and lots of water wastage for flushing down the waste. Its better to go with the composting toilet its environment and budget friendly.I would recommend you to buy The Nature's Head dry composting toilet as I have read the reviews of the customer and this source https://topreviewedten.com/best-composting-toilet/

There are various techniques for accelerating the decomposition of your waste regardless of which composting toilet you own. This source https://topreviewedten.com/all-about-composting-toilets/ has beneficial information about it I emphasize you to go through this link I hope this will help you out.

Are you sure about that? They seem to be still up and running and you can still order. They make a great system. If they are gone, Airhead is an almost identical alternative which I bought as it has a smaller foot print. Same great technology as the original 2 owners of NH split up and one started Air Head.

The basic C-Head, which I have, is only $599. I also have the external urine diverter which adds another $80. If I could have, when I bought mine, I would have eliminated the churn to save $35. I don't even see the BoonJon for sale on their website anymore, so I'm not sure where the $1K comes from.

Basic C-Head

The C-Head is not the cheapest composting toilet out there, but I think it's one of the most comfortable and best made. It also looks more like a real toilet than almost anything else - something that was important to my wife.
