You will need 1 1\4 in. iron pipe about 4$ a foot.enough to get the sand point well below the water leval in the hole at least 2 feet below.
Dig as far as u can with a post auger or a 2 in auger if u can find or rent one .once you reach the water level the auger can go no farther as the sand will just keep filling in the hole u dig.from that point farther use a post pounder to drive the sand point below the water level . I never use a length of pipe longer than 5 ft. at a time as it is too high in the air when pounding .you will need a extra pipe nipple to protect the threads on the top of the pipe when pounding . It is next to impossable to do with a sludge hammer!!!!

Pretty good advice. I pounded in a sand point just like yours using 8' pipe lengths using a 5' step ladder and a 20 lb sledge hammer. It worked and my arms were bigger after that but it was not a safe method.

My key advice is that you use a sacrificial (say 2-3") piece of pipe with the drive cap to protect the threads on your pipe lengths. There are a few utube videos you can find that will be helpful in this regard. Unless you encounter rocks this will be a fairly straight forward, but labor intensive project. Mine works great with a cheap pitcher pump.

get the drive cap to protect the end and one of the fence post drivers that look like a heavy pipe with handles. if you can get a tripod up and a pully you can rig up a precussion system that makes it less tiresom to drive it.

also, they don't work in rocky soil or clay, they are called sand points for a reason. i suggest you check on your soil type, USGS has water table info and soil types for the entire lower 48, your county soil and water office can help find the info.

my place is all rocks or clay and the clay has a water table on average 6" below the surface and swamp plants around the low spots. i had to return my well point when i couldn't use it but the high water table meant i only had to dig 4 or 5 feet to dig myself a shallow well to get water i can use for washing, gardening etc (after treating) and filter with a .02 micron filter to make it safe to drink.
