been out with Gary O picking blackberries.theres a lot this year.
i also see the oregon grape is on.theres so much to pick.i saw an old crap apple tree,and plan on picking some to make jelly.
what are u picking for free?i do love portland for this...but down in our neck of the woods where the cabin is.nothing to pick.

it has been a bit dry this year in Mi. normaly we would have blueberries, rasberries, blackberries,strawberries and apples. I would sure like to enjoy some of your bounty all except the crap apples. that doesnt sound good to me

Been busy here doing our preserving. Have put up 35 jars of strawberry jam and 6 jars (so far) of raspberry preserves. The raspberries are coming in fast so I do a jar a day. I dehydrated a pan of tomatoes from our gardens too. We also put up (but had to pay for them) some cherry preserves. The cherries we bought were cheap $17.99 for 20 lbs. because they were on the small side (but still tasted great).

None of these are "wild" but other than the cherries they were free from our gardens. *S*

Hattie, you sure sound like you are keeping busy!!!

2 weeks ago the raspberries were prime at the cabin but my husband and son had no time to pick them while they were there. This last weekend I noticed the bears had got them. I'm still waiting for the blueberries-not sure we will get any this year.

Cabi...having blueberry pancakes for dinner tonight-can't wait! Store bought fresh blueberries and nope...can never have too many!

My wife harvested the first crop of blueberries yesterday. We should still be picking into mid-September. The Winesap apple tree is loaded, the white riesling vine is heavy with grape clusters, but the corn is barely knee-high by the 9th of August; I think that it was way too wet in the spring and the rabbits have been feasting on the leaves.
What is a crap apple?

small wild apples.
Apple or Crabapple Jelly
4 cups crabapple juice
(about 3 pounds crabapples and 3 cups water)
4 cups sugar
To prepare juice, select firm, crisp crabapples, about 1/4 firm-ripe and 3/4 fully ripe. Sort, wash and remove stem and blossom ends; do not pare or core. Cut crabapples into small pieces. Add water, cover and bring to boil on high heat. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, or until crabapples are soft. Extract juice and pour into jelly bag. To make jelly, sterilize canning jars and measure juice into saucepot. Add sugar and stir well. Boil over high heat to 8 degrees Fahrenheit above the boiling point of water (approximately 220° F depending on the altitude where you live), or until jelly mixture sheets from spoon. Remove from heat; skim off foam quickly. Pour jelly immediately into hot canning jars, leaving ¼-inch headspace. Wipe jar rims and adjust lids. Adjust lids and process in a boiling water bath canner for 5 minutes for pints at altitudes from 0 to 1,000 feet or for 10 minutes from 1,001 to 6,000 feet.
Approximate yield: 4 to 5 half-pints

Sorry i have not answered these...been getting 17 yr old stuck on foam padding scraped off the sub flooring of our house.bleck.torn out tons of foam staples.gosh.how we putting in tiles.anywho!
Hattie i always love to see your pantry.i got to get going here.today ,me and the mister are going to pick blackberries.
i should get the crab apples too.i love anything where u dont have to purchase pectin.
Grapes are coming on but they arent wild.

an old time favorate of mine is dandelion fritters.

while most people i know think of them as unsightly weeds in their yard i view them as good eatin

100 yellow flower heads
1 egg, or soy based egg replacer
2 cups flour
1 cup water
olive oil (or other oil)

collect the dandelion heads, rinse off the flower heads to get the bugs off and dry. mix the egg, flour and water into a batter, put the oil in a pan at high heat. dip the flower heads into batter until coated then drop into the hot oil, cook 1 minute then flip and cook 30 seconds, take out and put on paper towel or cardboard scraps to cool. serve hot or cold as is or with ranch dipping sauce.

for a cool drink put a few handfulls of wood sorrel into a pitcher of water, the sour taste makes a lemonaid like drink (an aquired taste), but don't drink it often. the sorrel can also be added as a sour flavoring in salads
