Where are you located Owen, just curious.
Yep, worry about my two boys, 12 &8 all the time. My 12 year olds a A&B student, good work ethic, does his own woodworking.

Kind of a shame working all those hours when you should be able to enjoy life.
There was a time in this country where if you worked hard, you were rewarded in your retirement years.
I fear the future.

Owen, you could sell, but smaller chunk of land, build again. The economy will come around as soon as the jobs killer in cheif is gone.

I don't think he can wait 4 more years....

and on roads they shouldn't be crossing when we are driving by! This looks just like the one that we almost hit coming home from the cabin Sunday night! And last night a doe ran out on Mr. Troll and earlier today another doe ran in front of me. Really need to be watchful especially at this time of year!

Like the bimbo who called in on the radio show complaining because she couldn't understand why the road crews would put the deer crossing signs on the more populated roadways...her thought was that they should put them up in school crossing zones and other areas where cars are already going slower.....................................................OOOOKAY..........really... ...was she serious?????????????

Anyways...nice buck ya got yourself Owen!

You are not old!!!!!! Sorry...hats have a way of messing me up-one time my son had a friend over and his father came to pick him up. I answered the door, invited him inside and yelled down the stairs to Marcus that his grandfather was here to pick him up! His dad corrected me and I was sooooooo embarrassed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just wanted to die about then...luckily he just laughed it off!

I am doing well, thanks for asking! I am just under 3 weeks till my due date...trying to decide if I should go to the cabin this weekend...I'm leaning towards "yes"!

We do have names picked out but mums the word

I do plan on relaxing at the cabin. I need to...we will have a house full of people next week for Thanksgiving. After that weekend I am going into solitary confinement til the baby arrives...and even afterwards I don't want to come out! The only thing I will finish is a little painting that we didn't get done last weekend. It shouldn't take long. Mr. Troll has a lot he wants to get ready before the snow comes and sticks around for good so he will be messing with the tractor and the shed and getting stuff put away in the shed (or should I say "the roof" cause that is only how far we got on that project.) We have firewood that we got WAY behind on splitting too

Will you be hunting this weekend-it is season opener in Wi but isn't Mn a week different one way or the other? If you are have fun but stay safe...and bring home the "big one"

The ceiling is gorgeous! Where are you building this cabin? In Minnesota?

Our thanksgiving meal will be done by others while I sit my butt on the couch (yeah right!). I'm sure I will be doing a fair share of the work because it is really hard for me to just sit back and watch others do stuff for me but I will force myself to rest as much as I can. We will have 3 turkeys- the big one will get stuffed and done in the roaster by "the women". A turkey fryer will be frying one out in the garage- this is where the men tend to hang out and drink beer while they watch it cook. And the third turkey this year will be a smoked turkey done by one of our guest ahead of time. I have tried to have others bring parts of the meal or drinks. I will do what cooking and baking I can the day before and pace myself. Most of the work comes with having the overnight guest like my brother and his 3 kids because to him it is just "vacation time". The only reason I am letting him stay the weekend is so that my niece-she has been battling Leukemia and my daughter can spend time
together. I know it is crazy...I hope I don't need a rubber room!

Enjoy hunting with your son and grandson!!!!

The day someone tells me my tree stand does not meet code on my ranch is the day I go off the deep end and start chasing off said people... heh

I work 10 hours a day.. but from the sound of it Owen, you are enjoying your land this hunting season.. so.. imo.. once again, sounds to me you should keep that land. You won't be able to replace it.. and one never seems to get around to doing it again.

My ex wife once told me my computer was the reason we had "issues" was because of my computer and my dog. I got rid of both... we still had issues.. lol...I got rid of her, I had no more issues :P

My point is, we work long hours and we think that if we just get rid of a few things, we could work less and not have to stress so much.. but some of the best times I have had was when I did not have $2 to my name. I had my wife and my kids and we had food on the table. It was not always steak and potatoes, sometimes it was just potatoes, but we ate, and we enjoyed what we had.

Now, we have a ranch and things are still tight at times, but we would never be able to get what we have when we are at that ranch. Once you walk out that 'door', it's hard to get back into it.

I wish you luck in whichever way you go.. but that land sure is beautiful and those deer seasons sure are awesome.

Well we're home from the last weekend of deer season. My 12 year old grandson got skunked, but my son and I shot two more does. So we got three. We saw a bobcat with a rabbit an ermine, lot of grouse. I've been cutting meat this afternoon. It's always hard to get it done at home when you work dark to dark. We had tenderloin tidbits in garlic and butter. The best.
I dropped the land sale contract and keys at the realtors on the way down on Fri. Just because it's listed , doesn't mean it's gone.

Troll......My oldest daughter just butchered one of her huge freerange turkeys for Thursday. Our kids and there kids are all comming, 14.
Take it easy.

The weekend weather sure was gorgeous huh? Heard lots of gunshots and saw many, many hunters out. On our drive home we were counting the "suits of blaze orange". There was a pick up truck parked in a field and the hunter was nowhere to be seen but right next to the truck were 3 deer eating the corn left by the combine!! Pretty funny.

You must be close to busting.

I did list the place with Majestic Pine Realty. I also had a buyer for some house logs out to mark a hundred trees for him to build with. The logs will be going to Iowa. I get ten thousand for them. I cut them and pile them along the driveway. That should help pay some bills. I have a lot of trees. You won't notice a hundred gone if I take a couple here and there.

As you get older you need a bit more comfort and convenience. It is expensive and time consuming to run two properties. Even stressful. Best of luck, get the best dollar you can.

The timber sale fell through. I suppose I come off as hard nosed, but I refused to fell a tree unless it was paid for.
On the plus side, I was able to refinance my home and get my bills less than my income. As some more time goes by, I just might be able to pull my cabin and property off the market.

Hope it works out. MN was hit hard.

Love the picture. It makes me wonder what happened to that village mentality. Look at all those hands working together. It may just be my perspective, but as families and friends spread all over the country it is hard to get a regular gathering like this, where everyone pitches in for the greater good. Even on this site most of the pics are of two buddies (maybe one more) doing the work. It kinda makes me sad that we aren't bonded villages like we used to be.

Our cabin back then was a small farm house moved about ten miles. It was built from shiplap lumber and with the knot holes, let mice run free. After Dad died in '83 we tore it down. I used several of the windows in our new cabin. We also built a 1/4 mile from the main road. My sister built another cabin near that road. I love being back a ways from any traffic, although there isn't more than a handful of cars go by in a day. It still nice to be back.

Owen,

My 2 cents: You should NOT sell! If you can move there you should. Keep on selectively harvesting your timber to pay for day-to-day expenses, re-plant and work to make this a sustainable homestead. Get rid of machinery and equipment that don't get used much and have high upkeep associated with them. Preservation of wealth through land ownership makes very good economic sense in these uncertain times.

Hi Owen,

I enjoyed reading your story here. I think you built a cabin for a friend of mine - Flynn east of Cotton. I live in hermantown.

Any updates on your plans to sell your property? I have some friends who were talking the other night (might have been beer talk) about looking for property south of Duluth for recreation/deer hunting. If you have a plan to sell some or all of it, I would tell them.

Also, are you still building or doing work on cabins? I have a roof job to do on my small cabin NW of Cotton and possibly an addition to do on another cabin. I'll be putting out some bid info soon. Would you like to receive it?

Anyway, good luck to you. I know the feeling. It's tough to even think about selling your dreams, but I'm also in that position. I'm 66 and I'd be doing the work I have to do on my cabins, but I can no longer do everything I used to do. In fact, I'm headed to physical therapy this morning.

Take it easy,
Jerry

Hi Jerry, Yes I build Duane's cabin, quite a while ago now. I could look at your plans.

I have our land for sale though Majestic Pine Realty, Sturgeon Lk. MN.

The value of the land is the access control to Solana State forest. Swamps make access by other means in the area almost impossible. The land needs to be sold as one parcel. And with it, it like owning 2000 acres.

Scott, I'm trying hard to get my living expenses low enough to get by without selling. I think I'm actually there, but my wife still thinks we need to get into better shape. Living there is very lonely. It's not for everyone. You can't see or here the outside world, except for airplanes.

Hey, Owen. Hope you and your wife are doing well and were able to keep your land. I see you haven't posted since January, so were wondering how you're doing.

It sure has been a long winter here, hasn't it? I'm 3 years from retirement, and am trying to figure out how to have a small place up north, if I can. My daughter and son-in-law left the cities for college in Duluth 10 years ago; they'll never move back down here. I want to have a place to put a small cabin to be near them and am starting to look.

I go camping all the time at Moose Lake S.P. You're in a beautiful area. Best wishes, Sandy

Thanks for asking. We've been doing good. Snowmobiling every week, mostly up the North Shore. Sandy I've heard too many stories of our young kids moving to the Cities and not coming back. Good for your daughter.
