This was an interesting write up regarding the discussion at hand. I'd like if our anonymous poster would have a look at it.

http://www.examiner.com/article/after-newtown-shooting-it-s-time-to-have-that-nationa l-conversation-on-guns

This was also interesting, regarding citizens that stopped mass killings,

http://gunwatch.blogspot.com/2012/12/mass-killings-stopped-by-armed-citizens.html

Israel takes the safety of its children seriously. They have very few succesful school shootings. The teachers carry rifles, either full auto M-16's, or in the case of the picture currently going around the web, one with a WWII era M-1 Carbine. I was going to post that pic, but I cant figure out how to load it.

Back somewhat on topic, I'm good with my antique'ey type Winchesters and single action revovlers for the most part, tho I understand why people like the more up to date styles. What I like, and is over 100 years old in design, was state of the art at that point. When the first repeating arms were made in the 1860's, some called them "machine guns" (in a different sense than is meant today, as they were more of a machine than the old style single shot and muzzle loading guns then in use were). It was used as a perjorative though.

That says more than you might think

I meant more than what I said, and you understand. GMO foods, PharmoGiants, healthcare monopolies, banking, conglomo corporations, insurance companies, gubment interventions and all the other evils of the modern world are all good topics for another discussion...

Back to the original off-topic, guns are nothing more than a tool. Like any other tool, they can be used maliciously. There's already a law against bringing guns on school grounds, there are also laws against making and selling meth. More laws is not the answer, improving the human experience is the answer and I believe that's why we're all here

It is Comical the Term "Assault Weapon".... because there is No Such Thing out there. How can you Ban something that doesn't exist. You can Ban a Gun because of the way it LOOKS, but it's guts, it's workings, it's mechanism are almost identical to semi-Auto Deer Hunting Rifles.

What you have are so-called Journalist that do Not know what they are talking about. Journalist today speak first and then when their conversation was proven incorrect or massively wrong they never come out with a retraction. There is No Standard or Professionalism in Journalism anymore.

Think back to the whole Kilee Marin case and how Nancy Grace lambasted that Young Mother for supposedly killing her child. There was No Evidence. The Public was told a bunch of lies about the case, there were never any retractions.

The News Media are intent on 1 Thing, Selling Advertising, and being #1 at that goal of being the Leader in selling Advertising during that time slot. The Facts, and Actual worth of bringing forth the News are not even secondary to them.

All these High Profile Murder Cases are un-abashed against the defendant. These USA citizens are Tried and Sentenced by the News Media well before the Actual trail Starts. It sickens me to the point where I refuse to watch any news program, as they all surely Lie and Stretch the truth to fit their advertising schemes.

I guarantee you that most of these criminal cases on the news lately are all highly sensationalized to the point where these New Programs CREATE the News rather than commenting on it. A Newspaper Man won the Pulitzer and had to fully confess to completely Fabricating the entire Story and article. This happen in Boston and was shown on the highly prized Tv Drama "The Wire".

Who knows if OJ really killed his Wife and her Friend, the News Reporters got so fully engaged in that story to where the truth was Never going to come out. leading to complete and total speculation.

This my friends is what will happen with this school shooting as it was an Event from Hell for these NEws Types. I bet they all are Salivating in their News Rooms crying in awe at this story for it will give them material for the next 2 years. They will bleed this story for all it's worth and then some. The Truth However; will be thrown out the door. I have a bad feeling that we will never know the truth.

That is the #1 thing in the country currently as our Government keeps so many secrets from us. All these Black agencies, and $$-Trillions spent on Defenses needlessly. Just do a tiny bit of research back in History to see that the "Start" of Cold War was a Complete and Utter Fabrication by our Government. Think of the $$ Trillions wasted, the Lives Lost, the Fear put in the public. All Back when Russia was not a threat.

Our Government feels that the Citizens can't Handle the truth, so they keep it from us. We have wasted so much effort and energy fighting amongst ourselves. Human Kind is Doomed until we can shake off the confines of our Governance, so that we all can Live Free and Pick and Choose our own way in life. The entire reason for getting away from the Urban confines to the Wilds of Colorado; for me that is.

I too collect old style reproduction lever guns and six shooters. I only have a couple originals.
I fear that someday the government will brand me a radical and take them away. It seems that there are a lot of people that think If we need a gun, we don't need a lot of guns. I'd say they aren't all for shooting, just family heirlooms.

Gee, I stepped out for a day and this thread went really off-topic - protection and the cabin became a gun ownership, rights and control discussion.
I guess it's too late now.

Changing the topic's title and moving it to the "Off-Topic" section.

Bwaa ha ha ha. Most humorous post of this thread.

I bought my "assault" rifle strictly for assaulting the coyotes that have overrun the area of my home. The bullets say "varmint" on the box. Honestly, when I first got it, I thought it is a little weird to own a weapon like that. Is it necessary? I don't know. I guess yes is the answer. I wanted a semi auto so in the likely event that I missed a running coyote at 200 yards, I still have a good chance of getting it with a quick follow up shot. In the end, like was said above, it is just a gun. It is not a machine gun. Or an assault rifle. Just a gun. For shooting coyotes.

I have a friend that makes part of his living selling "slide fire" adapters for AR-15's. Those, I truly think, are unnecessary. And really should not be legal. They fly under the radar somehow for use by a handicapped shooter. I give him sh!t about it when I see him, how he needs to find something else to sell soon.
Yet, as easy and cheap as they are to get, no one has used one inappropriately enough to make the news.

Don mentioned the application process to purchase. My carry permit serves as a permit to purchase. I get delayed EVERY time. I have the cleanest record on the planet, and there is no other with my name, I have checked. My wife, however, can walk in and walk out with a gun every time. Doesn't matter. semi auto pistol, AR, revolver, everything. When I get delayed, they have 72 hours to deny. They never have, however if they were to, at any point in time in the future, they would send the sheriff over to my house to collect the weapon. At least that is how it works in MN. They have a seemingly endless amount of time to background check me, or anyone else.

Just poking in here. For protection at our cottage? Nosy neighbours keeping an eye on things and energetic foster dogs. I guess maybe the wood axe (?), but in my part of Canada not a lot of need for protection, haven't really given it thought. We don't own any guns or see the need for them at our place.

Runs about three hours or so for me and I get a phone call to come and get it. I don't get to take it until the Yes comes through

The TV media in particular ticks me off. One of the things ABC always brings up is the number of licensed dealers... more than there are McDonalds, etc. What they don't tell us or bother to check on is that a good number are very small dealers. People who hold an FFL in order to be able to ship and receive firearms for example. Some of those are gunsmiths.

Gun show exemptions should also be changed. It's a loophole. Waiting period of three weeks reduces suicides. These are all good ideas.

What is a "gun show exemption"?

Some seem to think that dealers dont have to do the regular background checks and paperwork, which is wrong, they have to do the same paperwork no matter where they do business.

Back before the instant background checks were instituted, that was considered"common sense restrictions". Now, we have them and more is wanted. This is exactly what many said in the past, it's incremental encroachment on the right to own arms. One step at a time. After it's discovered that the next round of "sensible restrictions" wont stop crime and murders (which even many that want them admit wont stop this sort of thing), whats the next step? Its always said "no, you're overeacting, we arent trying to totally take them away, this is just common sense controls, it's necesary to prevent crime".

The talk is all about "we have to have this discussion". Why? What discussion? What's to discuss? Those against guns (or certain styles of them) aren't going to stop, because they think that those that have them are unreasonable and must have some sort of problem because they "wont compromise". There has been steady compromise over time, since the Gun Control Act of 1968. It isn't going to end with this round of "sensible restrictions", and it never has. I don't see anything to discuss regarding a constitutional right thats already been steadily degraded over time. What so many keep missing is, it isn't about guns. Guns aren't the problem wth murders, and control of guns isn't about guns, its about controlling people.

What state has a 3 week waiting period? Why aren't states with no waiting period knee deep in suicides?

32 Special

Hey, I've got one of those, a 1913 model I believe.. Aren't they a kick to shoot? Literally
Supposed to be an attempt at an upgrade to the old 30-30, wasn't it?

Yes, sort of. I have a copy of an old Winchester ad that describes their reasoning, but I dont know how to post pics here, other than from photobucket.

There was also some baloney in gun print media about the 32 specials being inaccurate when they became the slightest bit worn, but the recent issue of "Cartridges of the World" put that story to rest.

You're right. I'm sorry. I got a bit wound up talking about the 32 special, and the bad rap it got for years.

The old Winchester ad is cool tho.

Can anyone tell me how to post pics without using photobucket?

in part... they also slowed the twist to make them better for cast bullets used with black powder. They fouled less with the changes. Mine belonged to an uncle. From 1909

That WHOLE Family is to blame, the Mother, the Husband that apparently left the Crazed Mother to totally deal with the Deranged Son

It's heartbreaking. I have a close relative who has a child with Asbergers syndrome. Extremely intelligent child, so creative, artistic, thats the part I see, trying to keep an open mind, and keep positive. The reality is the parents are totally and completely run-down, NO TIME to enjoy their lives, and this 24 hour job goes from age 3 to age 21, practically a lifetime. The best years of your life used coaxing a kid down from a high trees, keeping knives put away, picking up messes, dealing with tantrums. I am not surprised a person would lose the ability to cope under that stress. Having guns around is like matches and gasoline. There's only hope, and hope ran out.

Ok, thanks all, most of the time I post, its signing in as I post, the options look different once signed in. I guess I didnt notice the options after signing in.

...And cabinbuilder, thanks for letting folks discuss and vent, even if we got off topic a bit. Its been a interesting thread. Not likely anybodys going to change their minds, but as an online community, we can at least talk about things and stay pretty calm and civil.

Thirding what Malamute, and Borrego stated.

This is probably the most level headed discussion I have seen on the subject, and there are millions of forums having it this week. Some are simply unreadable due to the divisive nature of the topic.

Black Carbine (Semi-Auto), 9mm pistol and plinker are my three gun combo.

I've a full-bore rifle also but only the pistol goes walkabout with me. The rest stay in the secure area.

I bring a 22 rifle and a shot gun and always have a sidearm with me. Just in case an 2 legged or 4 legged threat would come around also for target shooting that is also fun. What do you bring?

9mm pistol, w/spare magazine (which I keep on me or close-by). An Armalite Rifle is close-by should I have need of it too.

No issues from the gun-grab idiots as I'm in one of the best states for gun rights.

Interesting thread. The Canadians' number one thing is bug spray. *S* Me too. We have lots of wild animals here, but we carry Deet, bear spray, bear bangers and an air horn. Sometimes I carry a knife, but that's for sniping for gold. *S* We have come across many bears, but noise is enough to keep them away (even the Mama's with their cubs). Oh, and hubby installed an Awooooooogggaaaah horn on our rhino for when we go out exploring. I'm not sure if the bears are really afraid of it, but it's fun to listen to. *S*

Old thread, old post but funny.

My brother has an old military hand crank siren at the lake. Maybe we should mount it to the quad.

As for other things, i bought a couple air horns due to cougar sightings but never remember to carry them. Saw bear droppings on the property this year but bears usually go out of their way to avoid people, so I don’t worry about them.
