I was watching an episode of Holmes & Holmes where Mike Holmes was helping his son renovate his own house and he used a new product called SigmaDek. This decking is an "aluminum and porcelain" deck surface on an aluminum sub-structure.

Apparently it can also be purchased at any Home depot Canada. It is also non-combustible, can be installed by yourself and only needs cleaning occasionally with soap and water.

Porcelain? How's that going to like a hammer, or a plumb bob, or whatever dropped on it? Maybe go to the home show and let something slip out of your pocket........ I'm just a natural skeptic, slow to adopt new stuff.

I looked over some of their videos- there are several showing manufacturing processes- worth a look- somebody dumped a pile of money into developing this.
The 'porcelain' deck boards are 1/4" thick ceramic tiles that fit into aluminum extrusions. So it's really just a tile deck on an aluminum structure. I don't know, but I imagine they are replaceable.
Great for fire areas, where wood decks are kindling to burn your house in a wildfire. They say the system is cost effective over the life of the system, but since aluminum never corrodes beyond structural integrity, how long are they calling the life of the product? In other words, I'm sure this is an extremely expensive decking system. Good lord- extruded aluminum floor joists with cast aluminum connecting components- wow. Assembly will be faster than with wood so less instal cost, but I bet even a basic kit is in the tens of thousands. If anyone comes up with cost per sq ft, let us know.
My cabin is in fire area, and I'm planning a deck. What I'm considering is a raised patio with concrete block retaining walls and compacted earth inside, topped with tile or flagstone. A lot of labor, but fire proof. I wonder how cost would compare with aluminum decking.

Till its as cheap as wood, I fear its gonna have a very limited zone of appeal.

Either that, or wood will get as expensive as this. Somewhere on their site says it cost 25-35% more than a wood deck with composite deck boards. That seems optimistic, but assembly labor is far less. Like Legos
