I have been lurking and making a comments on this site for awhile but this is my first time posting about my project. My wife and I purchased 2.5 acres in Kentucky about a year and a half ago. We wanted someplace close to the lake that we go boating. We have always camped near the lake but we wanted a place of our own we could go to whenever we wanted and not have to plan months in advance. We are in the progress of building a 12x16 cabin with a 8' porch with loft over porch and main cabin. I am going to upload pics to show the progress.

Before I post and do anything else I want to say thanks to everyone on this site for all the information I have been able borrow. I have received good info on what to do and what not to try. Thanks and feel free to offer any advice and critiques of my project.

Looking good. Do you have any floor plan or elevation drawings worked up yet? That's very similar to what I am considering but it appears to be oriented 90 Degrees from what I usually see done. I would love to see what the final plan looks like.

All the plans were in my head. I did what you are not supposed to do and just by just figuring it out in my head and started building. You will see what it looks like when I get a couple more pics posted.

That is how far I was able to get last fall. I am currently running electric and waiting for a nice weekend to be able to put windows in. I will post more pics of that when I have them.

Here is a pic of the shower. I am using a Ecco Temp hot water heater and a shur-flow pump hoed to a 55 gal barrel. This was the best thing that I have built at our property ( maybe second to the outhouse) there is nothing better than a nice shower after working outside all day.

I am NOT a carpenter. Why do the floor joist extend beyond the girder? Aren't the girders supporting the loft and roof load? Please explain. Thanks!

I'm not a carpenter either. I have the floor joints extending beyond the supports because it was easier to build it this way. I did not have to have the posts completely square when setting them in the concrete. I did a lot of research and looked at other projects and decided the cantilevered joists would distribute the weight to the supports to be able to support the cabin.

NICE! I LOVE KENTUCKY. I was stationed at Ft Knox for 2 years and my buddy was from Hazard. We would go to his dad and moms tobacco plantation every weekend and drive around drinking on his tractors all weekend long. Great memories that I will never forget and will always consider Kentucky as my second home.

Here are a few pics of the mini cabin/shed that I put up last fall so I would have a place to stay without having to put up the pop up camper.

I am feeling good I am at my property for an extended weekend. I am planning on putting windows in the cabin. I'm also renting a trencher to dig a ditch so I can run power to the cabin. I hope the weather forecast is correct so I can get some stuff done. Summer is coming up on us soon and as much as I like working on my place I would like to spend more time on the lake than working this summer.

I was able install all the windows in the cabin today. Still need to put the trim on but that can wait. Still can not figure out why when I post pics from my phone they turn sideways? When I post from my Kindle they come out correct and when I choose the file they are oriented correct there too.
