I think only this group could appreciate some of our progress...our friends think we're crazy sometimes.
In the last month, I had our electrical rough in approved (though staying off grid for now with Genny) and the ceiling is now insulated with the code required R50...what this really means to us is now we can go up in the winter time..... Halleluyah!!!!!!
Last week was like Christmas as we celebrated these hard earned milestones...saving...saving...saving (our kids think we're poor, btw!) I sold the old boat and three wheelers to bank more $$ back into the cabin for the plumbing. I told my wife I'm good...I can get some toys when the cabin is done in a few years.
So hear is a question...how do you know you have married your soul mate? When she calls you from a Saturday morning garage sale on her cell phone and says: "honey...you've worked hard and you need at least one toy up there...the fire chief has his quad for sale on his front lawn and I want to buy it for you! Come down quick with the trailer...I'm sitting on it and there are two old guys circling me who ant to buy it!!! Its a 94 but its mint with 1500 kms on it...and a plow. I'm a lucky guy

I installed a red tin (taken off of friend's barn) wall behind our woodstove. Rest of the room will be 8" tongue groove pine.
It was my wife's idea...must admit I think it looks cool...and was cheap!

Hey bushbunkie, I'm looking for a source of 8" tongue and groove pine. I live in the Sarnia area. I think you might also if I recall. Do you know where you'll get your pine? Just a big box store or do you know of a mill? Thanks.

By the way, your cabin is great!

Hey Kel,
Yup - live in Sarnia. Will most likely get the 8" tongue groove from the Liverance home Hardware outside of Lions head...they mill it there and prices seem comparable - so I don't have to haul it all up from here.

Hey bushbunkie,

I've followed this thread for a while now. I've been interested in buying property in the Bruce for a few years now just like you did. I'm deciding between buying land vs buying a land with a small cottage already on it. I'm looking for more information on costs of building and wondering if you can help me with some questions. Can we PM on this site?
TIA

Hi Cabinstever....not sure if we can pm. If you leave an email address I can connect with you. Don’t mind sharing any information re. Costs etc....many folks on this site and their willingness to share have gotten us where we are...just passing the candle on...yes it is a decision whether to buy with an existing structure and improve it or start fresh...knowing for your future that everything has been done right...and safely.

Hello bushbunkie. Sure like your enthusiasm. Sound like a lot of Alaskans I know. When I go back to the states and visit my dad I find it hard to think that I could live with all those rules.
When we built ours we can do as we please . Can also do that in the neighborhood I live in. Come to think about it just about anywhere except las Anchoreage.
We have put a tremendous effort into doing a remote cabin. And it is built to a high standard. Solid construction. Having a government that only knows how to be more restrictive must be terrible.
I feel proud for you and your family. You will have many wonderful moments, together with your family , because you are providing for that opportunity . I have enjoyed your thread. Thank You.

Hey Aklogcabin,
Thanks for the kind words and yes, you're right...we have made many great memories so far...so it is worth the work and the headaches. Funny thing...now that my two sons are 20 and 18 it's their friends that always say"ask your dad to invite us all up to the cabin!" My boys were so used to growing up as campers from day one...then moving on as "Cabiners" they just assumed all there friends had this opportunity. One kid who came up this summer has NEVER OWNED A SLEEPING BAG! When they come up to our bush lot and break out the pellet rifles, go down to the lake (Lake Huron) to watch the sunsets or see the stars around a roaring campfire (our fire pit is 8 ft. across) at night , they think they're in heaven. I think my boys are slowly clueing in that this is pretty special. I love your place!! and honestly, your vision is much more in line with my original vision of "a cabin"...absolutely. Unfortunately, here in Ontario we don't have that freedom and need to follow the rules or walk away from the dream. I lived in Yellowknife Northwest Territories for a few years and lived in a small cabin similiar to yours...and loved it. Keep posting on your progress and keep the fire burnin'.

Funny story...my 18 year old came up with his buddies this Fall and I had been outside and about most of the evening...I come in to find they have the monopoly game spread out over the kitchen table and had been playin for hours. When I asked if they needed me to start the genie to charge phones or
watch a movie they said no...wanted to keep playin and would be fine using the kerosene lamps

Hello Bushbunkie. Glad to see you doing a , take one make one, opportunity. Introducing those other young adults to the outdoors is fantastic. I always pick up used fishing poles at garage sales. Fun to give to folks as upgrades that have been gone through and respooled. All ages . The thought that folks still help each other look on their faces priceless. Feels pretty good to.
Beautiful girl you have there! We have a young chessy that I am training to hunt shed antlers. Up here we can get $20 pound for moose antlers. But I use them as dog chews . If you haven’t checked this out yet there is lots of web. Maybe something you’re boys may like.
On construction, I cannot think that our government knows how to build my dreams better. I decided that I wanted to use new construction materials, windows and doors and such. Cost less in the long run. And would welcome any engineer to examine the design and rate it. I know my family will always, well for a long time anyhow will have more opportunity for bonding.
The coolest thing about your cabin is it is yours. And now you can do whatever you want. I think you and your family will only continue to grow together. Building your dreams together. Can’t wait to read about all your adventures.

Busbunkie - great thread here. I see your (very nice) cabin and you mention a genie. I notice plenty of sunshine, so why not solar? Just curious. We are in NB and our works great. Also notice what appears to be the black dog? (not sure) under the table ready for anything that might drift down? We have a yellow one just the same.

Hey Beachman - good question. Solar is still on the agenda...waiting for prices to come down before we commit to anything. I had to wire the house (code) according to the Ontario Electrical Authority - but have only taken a "devices only" permit, which means I do not necessarily have to hook up to hydro. The genie at this point is just easier since we are up only weekends for now a we really only use it for movies, charging phones or power tools when workin on projects. We prefer peace and quite...so we limit the genie to only when needed. I think solar may potentially be the way to go as it gets really expensive running hydro lines underground etc. hook up, etc. How is your winter going in the great province of NB?

Winter really stinks here. Warms up to rain, then everything freezes. I would much rather have snow. Very cold and windy today. Winter only half over so should get plenty of snow the rest of this month and March. Cannot get to the camp until May sometime. Could ski in now (or walk on ice) but logistics of food and water are getting more difficult with age.

Winter has been crappy here in SW Ontario, too... -36 one day then raining two days later...then freezes...then snow storm...then +5....crazy...need three different jackets in the truck!
I hear the age piece...I personally cannot take the cold or hauling like I used too.
