For over five years we have slept hearing roar of the generator! had to have it for my husband's CPAP machine. Well we FINALLY hooked the place up to the local electricity. It was quiet as a church mouse out there! I couldn't sleep at all! I think I was so used to that crazy generator I'd forgotten what it would feel like to enjoy the silence. I think it will get better next time.

So I'm thinking of buying a brand spanking new bed for the cabin, something I have never done, always figuring I could sleep on a board, and mattress sales were a lot of hype. But I notice I toss and turn a lot more there than at home. Right now I have an extra firm mattress on a wood platform, no box spring. I did add a foam topper to soften it up a little.
I asked a commercial pilot friend of mine, who sleeps in a lot of hotels. He says a quality bed is very important, says expect to pay $900-1,200 for a quality bed.
Anyone in agreement?

Personally I like a firm mattress. I buy memory foam mattresses online. Cost maybe $100 for a twin. No box spring, platform bed. Way less $ and I actually prefer it. YMMV.

I use firm rated mattresses. I don't like those toppers as they make me feel too warm at times. Just a mattress on a wood platform. I don't recall the exact price but I think the last one was about $600-some dollars at Costco. Queen size

Paulz...dont do it..spend a ton on a mattress.
About 4-5yrs ago i splurged a bit and bought a $1200 king sized extra firm mattress. My back felt great for about 2 months...then came the dimple in the mattress where my butt/hips lay, so we turned it. Came back again and again. Now i dont bother turning it as it only lasts about 2 nights. It currently feels like im sleeping in a hammock.
Last month i got a $120 king 6in foam mattress from walmart for our cabin. OMG does this thing feel wonderfull. Way better than our $1200 matress ever did. Im going to buy the same mattress for our house. Even if i have to throw it out every other year and buy new its still 1/10th the price and i get a brand new one.

Hey, great tip on the foam mattresses! I like the idea also because I can use the wood platform I have now and also lugging a regular king mattress to and in and out of my cabin is a real chore.

I don’t sleep that well at mine. Last night I had the propane “wood stove†on because it got down to 30. Every time it kicked on or off I would wake up. My wife conditioned me to sleep with a fan going every night now when I don’t have that white noise i have trouble sleeping.

Slept awful this time out. My lower back and hips were hurting so badly I just got out of bed early.
Problem is that we are sleeping on a futon with a foam topper. The topper is thick but it’s not enough.
We plan on doing the same Brettny.
Buying a queen in a box foam mattress at Costco when they go on sale.
We will move the futon mattress and topper to the new guest room. All our guests are much younger and will be okay.
This is the first year I had a problem sleeping on the futon. Guess it’s because I’m getting older.

I have a bad back and right hip and our mattress was terrible. We ordered a Douglas mattress (only available online in Canada). It is heaven! I have never slept better. We've had it for about a year now. If you live in Canada I'd highly recommend them. The price is good too! (and no, I don't work for the company  )

Been reading reviews on foam mattresses. Seems they are loved or hated. Local to me someone is selling a new in box one of these for half price. Mostly very positive reviews but the negative ones are scary.

I have a 6in foam mattress. I dont hit the plywood under it or even come close. Whats the benefit of 10in over 6in?

Beats me, they have 12" too. I'm laying in my cabin bed right now and it feels fine. It's all a mystery to me...
