Old thread, but I’m thinking a Berkey might be a good cabin filter. I’m only afraid of forgetting them in the fall and freezing them over winter. Seems like an expensive mistake.

Has anyone tried this with water with iron ?

We have a homemade berkey-type filter at our cabin (2 stainless steel stockpots stacked with a ceramic drip Doulton filter in-between) and while I can't answer the iron question, I have found that over winter our filter either retains or absorbs moisture from the air and we come back to a cracked filer in the spring. We are going to start taking the filter element home when we winterize the cabin and bring it back the next season, since simply emptying the system wasn't protection enough.

Thanks money pit. Those filters are $120+ so don’t want to be replacing them every year.

The Berkey website lists iron, I'm just always skeptical. I think I'll either buy the filters and make one or buy the Berkey.

We've used a Doulton for a number of years to filter our water (plus a sediment pre-filter) through a standard filter holder. Take it out in the fall when we leave, clean the outside of it and leave it in the cabin until spring (gets well below 0 F in the cabin over winter). Never had a problem with it cracking probably because it dries out over a few days sitting in the cabin before winter really sets in. Doultons will last many many years before needing replacement and are cleanable.

We do it all the time . We put through a sediment filter first then boil as needed.

Last two posts on my Build thread describe my Berkey setup. Initial used a modified bee key stainless steel contained then switched completely to two pails and wished I had saved money and skipped the stainless steel container. System works great. I test it a couple of time a season with red food coloring. I do bring them home in the winter.
