Our cottage is in municipality of St Therese de la Gatineau.
We have 3 br cottage with one bathroom. Would like to construct a two br bunkie with toilet and sink. We could hook into existing septic system without problem. However we only see others around here build “garages” where they obviously have sleeping quarters but is hidden from inspector. I am assuming there is some rule about sleeping bldgs outside cottage. Would like to ask township but don’t want to tip them off to what we would like to build. Any suggestions on how we could find out about bldg codes for this area? Spectic is 10 yrs old.

In our area, all building codes are on the municipality’s website so they are easily accessible.

The issue I see is the septic was designed for probably 3 bedrooms, ie close to 160 feet of drain field and maybe 1200 gallon tank, but adding another sink and toilet in a bunkie, they may not allow it. Can you do a detached garage?

Yes - we can do detached garage. However adding sleeping quarters appears to be not allowed and people around here are adding them after inspection. Everyone is doing it. My concern is that municipality will not allow a second toilet.

At least where we are, size of septic is based on # of bedrooms, not bathrooms.....makes sense if ya think about it a bit...

Most, if not all, locales with septic regulations will size the system by the number of bedrooms. That makes a lot of sense, as nobody wants a system to not be able to handle the volume. Full time or part time should make no difference as part time use right now can easily turn into heavier use in the future.

So have contacted municipality and you are correct. Septic is sized according the number of bedrooms. Bunkies are not allowed anywhere on property. All disappointing news for us.
Guess we will build a “garage” and make changes after inspector is gone. Wish I didn’t have to do it that way. Does anyone recommend those composting toilets?

Yeah, don't ya love the government 'trying to help'?
Can you bury a couple of 55 gal drums and run a leach-line?
