Has anyone used tongue and groove from Home Depot or Loews for interior walls? I want to put T&G on the walls of a place I am buying and wondering how the product is. Or if I should spend more money and buy elsewhere. Anyone have any advice (and pictures)?

Thanks,
Jim

Used them for the ceiling. I wanted brightness so I went with a white paneling on the walls. The T&G was easy to work with. Had to do a good deal of pre-selection at HD. Stained before I took them up to the cabin. You should be happy with them.

Thanks. Any chance you have a picture of the ceiling?

Just did this in my buddy's cabin 2 weeks ago.
It was the 3/8 thick stuff from home depot. Easy to work with but had about 30% bad boards in the project.

Looks great! 6 inch boards? Are those the same boards on the wall and ceiling just with the smooth side out on the ceiling?

I think they are only 3 1/2 inches. The wood on the walls is bead board.

Oh ok. What is the wood on the ceiling? I want to go with 6 inch but not have the bead side out on my walls. I was thinking I could just reverse it and put the flat side out. I was at Home Depot today checking it out. Looks like it would work just fine. Any thoughts based on your experience?

Its really up to you. The wood on the ceiling had 1 smooth finished side. My buddy wanted the knotty pine look.
I don't know if what you looked at is the same type.
I myself would use t&g car siding. It comes in longer lengths and is 3/4 inch thick. Also wider so faster installation.
My friend was penny wise but pound foolish. He saved $ on the wood, but lost more on labor cost. It cost him the same amount of money to have a guy pick up a bad board and move it to the bad pile, as it would to pick up a board and install it.

My buddy has car siding in his cabin in KY. He had it built by the Amish. Any idea where I could get it? My house will be in the Poconos in PA. I live in NY.

Home Depot, Lowes, or most lumber companies.

I haven’t seen it at Home Depot or Lowe’s. I’ll keep looking. Thanks!

They don't call it car siding. But they have a few types of t&g planks. Same thing I think.
Good Luck, and post pics if ya can. 👍

I saw one today at Home Depot. It did have a bead on one side but the edges on the other side were beveled making a nice seam. Also both sides were the same condition as far as smoothness.

Thanks for your help! I will certainly post pics. i hope to close on it mid February.

I've been using Home Depot and it's listed on their website as Gorman pine tongue and groove. I've so far purchased and installed close to 600 12 foot boards. I'm in the Minneapolis, St. Paul area so I go online and check several near stores to make sure of what they have in stock and then go and hand pick it myself in 100 board lots.

I give it two coats of lacquer, (I'm a painter by trade) and then pack it, haul it 220 miles to the lake, 3 miles by boat and then 200 yards by ATV. Yeah, it's been a lot of fun.

I used the stuff from Menards. Really liked it, no issues. I did not sand or prep in any way (other than to wipe off the sawdust)

2 Coats amber shellac for the warm glow.

Is that 1x8 stock or 1x6?

My ceilings are all 3/4"random width pine planking and my walls are 3/4"x 6"tongue & groove. This is Canadian pine with the big knots.I have had no trouble with shrinkage. I think there is enough play in the depth of the grooves to hide any shrinkage that does occurs. The 3/8" packaged pine breadboard that you can get does dry out and shrink badly exposing seams.

If your in the Huntsville to North Bay area of Ontario, you should have a chat with Greg at Trout Creek Planning Mill. I have purchased all of my T&G pine there and it is terrific quality at about a third the price of Lowes or Home Depot. You can get it in 6', 8', 10' or 16 ft lengths. I have been doing all the walls and ceilings in my cottage and have been really pleased with the product and service. My cottage is past Temagami so I take a minor detour off HWY 11 and pick up all boards. http://www.tcpmill.com/

Lots of great information here. Thanks all! I live in New York but the house is in the Poconos in Pennsylvania. I'm officially in contract. Home inspection next Wednesday.

I found a place that sells 1 3/4" T&G.

I think I will use it for the outside of my 9x12.

Should be good enough racking strength....

Probably okay on something small. True anti-racking strength comes from triangles which is why in the old days 1x material was often (best) used on the diagonal. If you are just nailing through the tongue to hide the nails you will have no triangles at all. With wide boards that are face nailed you get a series of a bunch of smallish triangles with the nail pattern. But 9x12 is small, so probably okay. Seems like a lot of lumber to use though.

Try to find a local mill that sells their planer outs or seconds. I was fortunate when I built my cabin that I had a friend who worked at the mill. The p-outs price for regular customers were .40 per bf. His price for me was .18/bf. The seconds from the mill were leaps and bounds better than the stuff at Home Cheapo and the local building supply store. You should always figure in 10-15% more than you actually need.

I won't be doing that. I'll put in two per on each post. It will be going into 3 6x6 posts down the 'long' side on a timber frame structure, and those posts will have braces.
