Awhile ago a friend gave me a bunch of new click type floating laminate flooring that was put in for a home sale, new owner pulled it right out. Finally going to use it. The room (at my house) is a 14x30 rectangle. The 'boards' (they are some kind of composite) are 6 feet long, plus I have a bunch of cut pieces.

I think you are supposed to run it the long direction.
But my front door is on a long wall side at one end, and on the other side at the other end is a slider. One wall of the short end is solid (fireplace) and the other leads to a hall.

Does it really matter?

but with all the shorter pieces I have, running it the shorter direction would allow me to use more of the shorter pieces at each end of the run.

Its dosnt matter how you run them. Do what looks best. Use the cut pieces against the walls.

Thanks Brett. One consideration: if I run them the short way, 14 foot, means I have to use 6 foot full lengths per run, with two feet left over. Best I can stagger is a two foot piece at opposite ends of each run, meaning I will have alternating butt joints running down the middle of the room two feet apart, and again at each end. Might look funky, or not?

Long way I can stagger at 2, 4 and 6 foot intervals.

Contrary to my usual MO, I only want to do this once..

I think usualy they do a full then a half to start on that laminate stuff so 2 4 6ft would better. And the seams would disapear a bit more.

It is always run in the long direction for appearance. But you don't have to.

Do they also have a click joint of some kind on the ends?

I usually start the first strip with the end against the left hand wall--- if you have enough 6 foot lengths you can cut some of the lengths that start at the left shorter. That helps to stagger the end joints.

Yes, click joints at the ends, have to start at left hand wall. Going to try the 2 4 6 butts, here I go..

Well I have about 5 courses in. Not sure about this stuff, I have chipped a few ends and the top finish is not very thick before you get to light color underneath (it's walnut color). Hopefully it holds up to dog claws. And 6 foot lengths on a 30 foot run is kinda short. This must be the cheap Home Depot stuff you put in when you're selling your home.

On the bright side it's going in my dumpy tract house, not my fancy hand built cabin.

Thanks for the advice, photo later.

Alot of laminate flooring is like pressed cardboard. Chips are going to happen.

We had it in our old house. It chips easy on the edge. They make a block that you can put against it to tap with hammer. I just used my bounce less hammer.

Ours held up good with dogs. What will hurt it is if grit get under a hard surface like a chair or couch. People flopping down can make chair slide and it will scratch
