The water stopped flowing when the power went out. Not only was everyone sitting in the dark wondering if all the food in their fridges and freezers was going to spoil but they couldn't get any water to drink, bathe, or flush the toilets.

What back-ups do you have if your water system goes down?

Always have bottled water handy. I can get toilet flush water from water tanks. I can plug house pump into generator. Power was out this winter for two days so made me rethink strategy. However, when not at the cabin and back in the city, I don't have the same equipment so I must rethink that strategy too. Very least, several gallons of bottled water.

It's funny, but lots of people think about electricity at their cabin. Solar panels and inverters and batteries et al, but the more critical system - safe water and lots of it - gets some initial consideration (ie putting the system in place) but not much thought after that.

Of course, you don't want to be poisoned by contaminated water so you check the UV filter and well every once in a while, check the pumps and storage tanks but what do you do if the whole system stops?

Or you look into methods of keeping your pipes from freezing but what to do if the pipes do burst and you can't operate your water system until a plumber gets up there (or you with a stack of new pipes)?

Lots of people have a back-up for when the power system fails but few people have any back-up for the loss of water.

I have between 5K and 24K gallons of collected rain water in cisterns, depending on time of year. And solar power for pumping, pump spares, purification system with spares.
