Couple days ago wife woke me up from my afternoon nap, required at my age and level of physical conditioning.

Hey, there's a fort over there!
Huh?
A fort, across the ravine!
A fork?
No, a fort, or a cave.
Ugh, OK I'll get up.

Sure enough, as I peer out the window, there is some sort of hollow in the steep hillside about 100' from the cabin. So the dog and I venture over to it. I'm hoping it's an old gold mine..

What it is.. 100 or so years ago my lot was logged. Surrounding the stumps grew a circles of new trees. At some unknown time a fire also swept through, maybe around the same era. So this is the remains of an old stump, and apparently the dirt underneath has washed away, exposing burnt root area.

It would make a neat place for something, if it weren't so steep and rugged over there.

I found a small silver oil lamp.
I rubbed it, but no genie came out.

We live by a very old abandoned coal mine. We find all kinds of machinery parts, old cookware, bail type mason jars, lots and lots of old broken liquor bottles and Indian artifacts.
Bottles etc.

Obsidian arrowheads. Not so odd but old and evidence of people being here long before me.

Crashed airplane. Fortunately not a real one, just an old kid's toy from 30 years ago. Haven't figured out how to post photos here.

Our cabin is built on land that was a generating station for a gold mine about 30 miles away in the 1920's. We have found lots of insulators, old pop bottles, beer bottles, and metal pieces of all sorts. It's always fun finding new artifacts as the kids call them.

OK, that seems easy enough. Read the info, duh. Not sure why it has the "delete attachment #1" link below the photo; maybe only I can see it as the poster?

I've found 2 old plow shares, ice skate blade, old roller skate, horse collar, buggy step, iron shoe thing to fix shoes, corn bread tray, model T timer piece, lots of Mason jars and a few bottles. The biggest find....finding out underneath the clapboard exterior of our house was a LOG CABIN!

We found the stone foundation to an old sugar shack that must be at least a hundred years old.

I found part of a buffalo horn in my yard. I think they were killed out in the 1880s.

OK, just got back, found a massive rock, 10X bigger than the memorial rock, was on my new back 20 (bought in 2014) and until it was thinned, couldnt see in it, walked boundary before buying, otherwise, wilderness. Now opened up from commercial thinning project and found this massive rock. I named it "Sleeping Giant Rock" and will make a sign. Also found the only single lonely Tamarack (AKA Western Larch) loggers call it "piss fir" as slang. It looks liek a fir tree, but closer look at the needles, its obvious, the bark is same looking as douglas fir. The needls (leaves really) turn yellow in fall and fall off and it looks liek you have a dead tree. Area is full of these, but o nly this one on my entire 40 acres. I will mark it and add a sign too.

I did find an old snag, 200+ year old, have no idea how long its been dead, see its seen a fire at one time based on charcoal around base. I cut it down to investigate and not sure how stable it was. Its old growth Ponderosa pine, the locals call it yellow wood or pitch wood. Its super tight grain, yellow in color and solid as a rock. Would of stood doe another 100 years I bet. The pitch seals it from water. I marked it and will determine what to do. About 28" inches across and solid for 18 feet or better. Outer 2 inches is punky, but rest is solid, no discoloration, rot, bug holes or anything.

I will dust off my Stihl 041AV Super chisel bit chain saw next time I go over there. I'd like to get it out on one swoop. Kubota work here, little Mule wont pull this log.

No pictures of sleeping giant rock yet.
Last picture is Tamarack, you can really see the difference in color, stands out well.

A few years back we were on snogos heading into or cabin site. I got stuck so jumped off into chest deep snow. I found a full bull moose rack, about 55 inches wide, and skull had gotten hung up in my track. I set it on a busted off tree stump at the beginning of the trailhead into the woods. A year later, I get stuck, again, near the same spot. My beautiful wife asks, can you find those moose antlers? Well an hour later of digging into chest deep snow I found them again.
My wife did get my snogo unstuck. We will hang them up on the cabin.
This moose may have died from old age but I suspect that the local wolves killed it. I have found evidence of 4 or 5 dead moose within a hundred yards of or cabin through the years.

Every year I find old logging equipment from about 100 years ago when there was 6 logging camps in our area.

Last year I found a old file half buried next to a tree.

This year I found two boom log spikes and two broken rusty cables.

I’m still looking for the old log cabin foundation where some of the lumbermen stayed.

I found a really old rusted out on the bottom pot with a spout on either end.

Long ago there was no garbage pick up. The family my husband bought the property from dumped their garbage for 150 years.

It’s really dangerous walking around there because you are walking on a mountain of garbage.
Every year I take my chances and do some digging.

Found a old maple bucket and these bottles this year.
Hmm. Not letting me post photos. I’ll try later.
