Looking for any help on digging water well. I'm about 200 feet from a major river bed when it is high water. Normal conditions I'm about 800 feet from the river water edge.

I'm looking to install a well for watering trees etc.. Any help to install a well would be appreciated.

3 choices,, shallow well less than 25 feet must have ground water in sandy corse soil no big rocks .
Deep well , 50 $ a ft. High cost .
Pump up from river , Honda fire pump. They are good for irritation. You may need a draw water permit .

For shallow wells, it's a pretty easy 3-4 hour project. I used a simple device to find the water, pumping water down into the ground. You could say we were probing for water. I followed the saying "If it can take water, it can give water." I found water at 25' and put a hand pump in.

This is a good resource.

In Idaho there is a public database website with map that you can look at local properties with permitted wells to try and give you an idea of what depth you are looking at. It shows date drilled, width, soil type, depth of well and depth of water.

Do you have any seeps on the property. I just found one and am working on developing it. Dug down, put in some light gravel, placed a PVC section with many holes drilled covered with landscape fabric, then more gravel. I now have a nice clean looking water source. Haven’t measured it but it will keep me from being dead without water. Now looking into solar panel, pump and pipe to get it to the top of the property.

Thanks for the great advise. No seepage, but I would beleive if I could get it down to 25 feet I would be hit water. That is a guess but being so close to the river I would think it would be right there.

I might get in touch with the power company and see when they are in the area if they would drill me a hole. Their digger derricks go down about 15 feet. Then I might be able to drive pipe the rest of the way.

If I got that dug down then should I drop in a culvert inn the hole? What is next if I hit water?

500' of 1in poly pipe and a $100 3/4hp and you should be in business. Drillling a well for water plants can get expensive and very labor intensive quick.

You need to post information about your soil and water table.
Your state probably keeps a record of every well that’s drilled in your area, you can learn a lot from those records.
A quick Google search for "how to dig a well" may be helpful.
