I get my water in the winter from a quick-moving spring and pond on my property. Drinking water is filtered (Berkey system). But for washing water I never know if I should purify it or not. I've used a bit of bleach before, but my wife hates the smell. I've used purification tablets but they seem to only come in small amounts suitable for 1 liter, not many gallons, and the cost adds up. I know I could boil it but are there other alternatives? Iodine?

Unless you know there is a problem upstream, I wouldn't worry about it for wash water. Also if you put in bleach, if you wait a day the smell will generally go away (unless you added too much, which would take longer).

My two cents

I pump our stream water into a 55 gal black barrel and add about 2 oz of bleach. The barrel helps settle out the fine silt and the bleach makes the wife feel better, lol

For washing I wouldn’t worry about it. But if you’re smelling the bleach you used too much.

You can always run it through a carbon filter. HD has them for $11 per 2 pack. This should take away most if not all of the smell.
