I have some 4by beams sitting on 4x6 posts. Instead of steel plates I was thinking about using 2x6s on both sides, as depicted in this photo, perhaps for the whole post length and beam height. My construction buddy says no but to me it would seem as strong as steel. Why not?

That should work fine. Try to through bolt that beam to post connection. More inportant is how long the beam runs to the next support and what size it is.

I'd think that'd be fine with decent connections...Just resisting rotation and lateral forces, really.

Thanks guys. Hard to find examples of this being done for some reason, maybe it just looks cheesy.

I'm with Brettny and Nate, I wouldn't be worried about it as long as the 2x6s have good connectors.
