Sheds without permits can vary in size from place to place. Here in NM it's 200 sq ft. I'm going to sound like a broken record... if you are building a shed to be an actual shed, store lawnmowers, dirt bikes and so on, then that is the shed the rule makers usually have in mind. However if you are building...

Hi: I am building a shed my county code says I can build a 10x12 foot shed without a permit. I am using 3 2x6x12 pressure treated beams set on concrete precast piers. I would like to ...

...mit fee. It was in a town and they more often want things done quickly to keep property values up and complaints down. It is a good question in your first meeting. You didn't ask but one thing to remember is never let a permit lapse once you've pulled it. You are building to the code in effect when you pulled the permit. If there is a...

...uction skill. However, i got a books and YouTube to help. That's part of the reason why i'm giving myself 8-10 years. I read other's challenges on getting a well drilled and with building codes. I got some idea on "temporary shelter" while the construction takes place. Something I'm curious about is this, "Is there a time table to build a home/co...

Julie, there is 2 people that can do electrical, plumbing and building. A licensed contractor or the land/homeowner. So you pull the permit, then have your freind do it, then have it inspected. You can be like the general contractor. ...

Julie, I would consider this: if moving is mandatory with summer right around the corner, purchase and have delivered a smaller building. Say maybe a 10x14 or so. Basically something under the permit requirements. That will give you quick, cheap shelter while you get your ducks and health in a row. Af...

The trusses are engineered. There is documentation for building permits on that with the engineer's stamp on the "More Info" tab on the website, along with the IBC codes met. The snow load requirement for Klamath C...

...f trusses may not pass code. Factory built trusses come with a stamped / certified engineers approval for being suitable for the task. There is no control over the site built as to workmanship so the building permit office may not accept them no matter what the seller states. Sold as a shed or barn they could be okay but once the building gets classed as...

...nted to follow the rules, there is all kinds of stuff going on at our lake that is questionable. I now will never go back to the municipality for anything. That is exactly why people want to avoid building dept and permitting. Its a shame. I had a wonderful experience. Its a shame when they (govt) are not held accountable like a private business. They are there to serv...

A lady in the tax office gave me the name of a guy in the public works department who handles physical addresses for land but said they don't usually assign it until the building permit has been approved. I need one now to check on internet, phone and cable services. Is the mailing address you got online the same as the one the town you assig...

... to run under the radar when it comes to permits. I wouldn't recommend it at all. Even though we live in a fairly remote area, the trucks come by on a regular basis just driving around town to see if anyone is building without a permit. If you are, they will slap a big old red sticker on your property and stop the build.

Once done, then you can close it in, ie sheetrock etc. They will check nail schedule there too, especially overhead. Will you have an attached garage?     ... big $$$ to buy a plan as little as 500$ is common . local water management organizations sometimes need to be consulted . sounds like you have a good grasp of the task your local building department will help a lot . they should after you pay development fees and building permits.

...on here for a little while but this is my first post. Like many here, I started by dreaming of having a property I can afford and live comfortably. I've been reading about the various permits, building codes and costs (and trying to stay excited haha), but seriously, it's nice to see that people do actually get through all the hurdles! I've been looking...

Back in the day we would discuss the intent of the law with the building official in trying to interpret the law for a particular situation. In having that discussion we could often work around those unintended restrictions of someone's use and enjoy...

...haring which county in TN that has this requirement? This is part of the IRC, generally it is the law in 49 states. However what you asked about was an accessory structure. A non permitted accessory building has to be accessory to a primary residence. That doesn't mean you cannot build a permitted utility structure such as a garage. Forestry is ag...

    1. Ask the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) whether or not septic is required to actually build a habitable building. Outhouses may not be permitted there. Or they may be. You have to ask them; all of us out here may have different rules. 2. Just because land is for sale does not...

...ea has different rules and will enforce them differently. Even the amount of area you need to be able to build will be different. I think, in my situation, there was not real connection between the building permit site plan and the septic report but I could be wrong as I had lots of space anyway, and I think I told the septic engineer where I was planning to build.

262. Posted: 15 Jan 2015 11:48 - Properties / Site Suitability Assessment?
With the caveat that every area is different - I went through the same thing even though I was using an outhouse and grey water (allowed in my area for a recreational place). To get the building permit (again very simple and cheap in my area), I still needed to have a "septic" engineer do a site assessment (including digging a few holes and perc te...

Another vote for staying away from the metal version. If you've ever seen a metal pole building going up, if it is going to be conditioned on the inside, they use large batts of fiberglass insulation wrapped in plastic that is applied to the exterior of the perlins before the m...

National Parks now follow the general rules for the state the park is in. Can be interesting when a park straddles two states. No firearms allowed in any of the park buildings though. National Forests are okay for firearms if the state laws permit them, except for the ranger offices. It is a mishmash.

NC Mts, I build in a rural mountain area and did the permit process. I can tell you those rural country folks are super to deal with. Nice, friendly and the process including planning dept and building dept stops I made to get the permit didn't take more than 20 minutes. They reviewed my plans and in a week, got the call to go ahead, p...
