What is the maximum square footage dimension allowed before a permit is required? What is the max wall height before a permit is required? Are there ways to circumvent the permit rules?

You need to ask this questions in your specific locality

A search for building permit with the county name should bring up their rules. Most often there is a size from 100 to 200 sq ft that does not need a permit as long as you do not live or sleep in it. Many of those rules also depend on you first having a permitted habitable building. Use google and then read carefully. Call the office # if you have any doubt. As far as circumventing rules, the people who wrote the rules have probably foreseen any dodge you can think up.

At my house in the burbs it's 120sf. At my rural property it's 300.
