Hey

I own 4x 20 lbs tanks and 2x 30 lbs tanks haha...

Honestly I sin and replace the 20lbs at home depot which is obviously the worst option.

How much people pay here to get a 20lbs re-filled? just curious if it is worth it for me to try and find a place near my cabin (Catskills) or if it is basically the same price give or take and not worth the time...

Any place that you exchange is going to be 15lbs of propane and the cheapest I have found for that is walmart at $15 I believe. There is one right in the town of Catskill.

I wasn't aware you where so close to me. I grew up in ulster county. I know of two spots that do 20lb refills for $10. One in dutchess (with hours worse than a bank) and one in cheango county. Finding a farm store, propane supplier or almost any store that does refills is your best bet.

Have you tried asking neighbors?

The exchanges are a rip off. Also you have to run the thing all the way out to come even close to getting moneys worth. Find a place to refill that charges by the pound

Welding shops are going to be your cheapest option and get a bigger tank. Understand the size of the tank doesn't mean it's all liquid. You need a void space in tank to have the liquid change to gas. The smaller the tank the more problems you will have with cold weather and the ability to make gas.

Seems to me with the number of tanks you have you are going through an awful lot of propane. I assume you must be heating with it? Is getting a bulk tank and having deliveries made to you an option? I had a hundred pound tank which I could move with a two wheel dolly and transport with my pickup which did function fine on my mountain top but wasn't that much fun to move. But I only did it once a year in better weather.

I am in Sullivan county.

I have this many tanks - 2x 20lbs at home for bbq. 2x 20lbs at cabin for bbq. and 2x 30lbs at cabin for water heater and stovetop.

I called around and cheapest I found is $13 with tax for refill. But it is a bit out of the way....

Oswego County NY - local mom/pop gas station/convenience store charges 13$ for a 20lb swap. More corporate place charges 20$ for a 20lb swap.

Get more tanks and make the trip to the cheaper place. I have about 22 20lb tanks. Most I have found on the side of the road for free.

I actually went to get some 20lbers filled up last month, they wouldn't fill them b/c they were 10 years old or something along those lines. Had never heard of that before, ended up doing an exchange on it for a newer tank.

Local big box nitwit handed me an empty tank in exchange... I insisted on another tank, and presto! It was a lot heavier. Buyer beware!

A propane tank that's less than 100 lbs. is good for 12 years. After that it has to be re-inspected which I believe makes it good for 5 more years but inspection is hydro testing which cost near what a new tank would.

Tanks are stamped with a date code and are a pressure vessel. This is one rule I actual agree with

In Canada tank are tested and stamped with the date and are good for 10 years. Retest and good for another 10. Never heard of 12 and 5 but perhaps that is a US reg. But I don’t really think so

Thanks for the info guys.....This was probably wrong but I just exchanged it for a filled one, hopefully the companies that exchange them can get them re-inspected for a reasonable cost.

The only reason il exchange a tank now is to get a brand new one. I can tell you that if you want a new tank dont do to these exchange places at the end of the summer. Go before the summer. My thought is everyone is grilling in the summer and changing out there old tanks. I even pulled one out that was to expire in a month. When I exchange I'm the one who picks the tanks I want. I look for new shiny brass valves then the date. I twore 3 cages apart once looking for 6 acceptable tanks at my local walmart.

The only time you want to exchange tanks is at walmart, who is the cheapest of course, Only if your tank has expired. I get mine filled at TSC, and it's $ 2.69 a gallon were I live. I'm going to have the propane company put a hundred pound tank in next year, and they charge a dollar more for delivery. I'm tired of chucking the tanks and getting old or lazy....

If you don't mind, where do you go? We take our tanks to Pulaski and they don't measure, they take the size of our tank and charge us that, doesn't matter if it is dead empty or not. They also told us not to run them completely empty or they wouldn't fill all the way again. We have 20 & 30-lb tanks. Last time there, by weight, (we weigh our tank to know when we need refills) I think we got about 22-25lbs but had to pay for 30.

In Pulaski I usually go to Deatons agway to have them fill a tank. For the $13 exchange I referenced above I go to Altmar Union Station, formerly known as Little lukies! Right on rt. 13, they have a really big tank there too so you probably can get your tanks filled as well but I have only exchanged them out.

I normally get my many tanks filled, but my friend gave me a couple of old crusty half full 20 pounders, which I used up, so I took one to Ace Hardware today for exchange, fully expecting them to turn it down. They said no prob, exchanged it for a full nice shiny tank. $20, about 5 more than a refill around here.

I get all mine filled from the propane delivery guy. Usually in the the summer when I pay 89 or 99 cents per gallon. But I also sign a year round contract. It is currently $1.31 per gallon. So no matter how high prices get, I am locked in at that price. But if it's cheaper, I get that price, but it will not go above that price. I started doing that quite a few years ago, back long before the time when prices went above $4 bucks/gallon. When that happened I was locked in at $1.89/ gallon.

Yesterday I drug a bunch of tanks to the propane/gas station. 38 gallons, $3.50 a gallon. A lot but will last me probably the rest of the year.

Now here is the odd part. One guy was working the whole place. Hands me a screwdriver, says loosen all the bleed screws, goes and works the gas pumps/register. Comes back, starts filling tanks and closing the screws as the propane is going in. Got to the last tank, 40lber, starts it filling, goes to work somewhere else, along with the screwdriver, bleed screw still open! After awhile it's not air coming out, smells like propane. I'm scrambling for a screwdriver, of course can't find one. He finally returns, turns off the pump, closes the screw.

Did I pay for some propane I didn't get? He says it was only air. Did I get a full tank?

If it was starting to spit dangerously COLD liquid propane is when the screw gets turned closed for full. A 20#er is set up to take 20#, anybody that tells you they can only fill to 80% of that is ripping you with a 'short fill' at full exchange price. Btw, propane is 4.2# @ 60*f per gal and the 'tare wt' of the complete empty tank is stamped on the collar (tare wt varies a bit). Add 20# to that to to see if you actually have a full fill.
Most exchanges here do 15# () at $20ish but one has tanks at 4.7gal., a Real Fill, for that same price. Even so, I weigh my tanks going out and at return.
The expired tank I exchange for one with their 'inspection sticker' dated as close to the current date as possible. As long as it is not expired I can also take them to TSC for a gal cost refill, currently $3.19 gal.
That is a lot more per gal. than what they charge to fill a home tank. They mark up the propane for 'recreational' cylinders.
