Many years ago i purchased a Polar 1500 dump trailer that i could pull around with my ATV. Although i never got to use it much, it worked pretty well. Biggest complaint i had was that when you dumped it, it wouldn't necessarily empty much of the contents because of how close it was to the ground. Anyways, when we sold the land it was part of the package deal so i no longer have it.

So i am looking for one again for my new land so i can do more work without having to bother others. I just don't know if i can spend $450 again on the same trailer when i wasn't 100% happy with it. Do you guys have alternate options that can handle a good amount of weight and not break the bank? My initial use is to haul gravel, secondary would be wood.

I have been thinking about this one because the sides come off and I could put wider items on it. Not sure how much weight you are looking to carry.

Guy at work has one very similiar and seems to be happy with it:

Just not sure i wanted to spend that much again. I would say i want something that can handle at least 500-600lbs minimum.

A few years ago Northern Tool sold these trailers from Yutrax :
https://www.yutrax.com/Product/x2-steel-mesh-utility-trailer-2722

I caught them on sale and bought one for about $350 I think it was . I've been very happy with it so far .

Now it looks like Northern doesn't carry them anymore but they have something similar from Polar.

No experience with the Polar , but i do like my Yutrax.

@Ol Slim...the Polar you linked is my lead candidate right now. Trying to understand if there is any benefit over the poly tub units vs. the steel meshed units. Obviously the poly ones prevent things like gravel/dirt/sand from falling out, but i can easily make some plywood inserts if/when i need to haul anything like that. Any other reasons one would be better than the other?

Craigslist is probably your friend on this one if you are not in a rush. I see some pretty good deals on there occasionally. I do see some people trying to get top dollar for absolute junk as well though.
I run a Poly dump cart I got for free and it has been doing the job of carting all my materials up or a cabin build. Its not ideal though. Its better for moving some camping supplies up the hill than larger loads. It does it with some straps but I have tipped it a few times.

What kind of material are you going to move and what didnt dump out of your previous one?

I see the tube sides and expanded steel floor being a real problem for alot of things.

I know its out of your price range but they do make a single axle 4x8ft dump trailer for on road use. Being able to get your own mulch, wood chips and gravel can be a real benefit.

@Brettyny initially it will be to move gravel using my atv. Long term i have big stones i want to relocate as well as firewood that will eventually be cut in the woods.

If the all steel one is a better idea for the long run, i can simply make plywood walls for when i haul things like gravel. Or just using an old tarp to line the inside would work if i'm just going to dump and not shovel the loads out.

My old one was poly and i mainly used it for firewood. however, my property was much smaller back then and quite honestly i didn't hardly use the trailer. I do recall it being a pain to keep the water out of it. I finally found a spot to stand it up when not in use so the water/snow coudn't pile up in it.

I have a 4'x8' road utility trailer that does have a dump/tilt bed on it. The walls aren't closed in so i'd have issues containing things like gravel. I could use this for things that don't require going into the woods, however it's probably just over 5' wide which would make it difficult to navigate.

For a different style than the links above, last year we bought a http://www.muts.ca/

We use it primarily for gravel and firewood, but it carries equipment in a pinch. Somewhat pricey, but worth it.

For us, MUTS was local (Eastern Ontario). But I think there are similar models being made in the U.S.

The northern tool one looks to have no or low speed bearings. The Mut trailer looks to have high speed wheel bearings like an on road trailer. By for a better choice for you want something to last. It also speaks to how well its made.

Isnt northern tool just selling mostly chinese products like tractor supply and others now?

I built a trailer for our hunt camp. If you are handy with a welder. It follows in atv tire width. Got a set of hubs of a small car with 13 inch tires. Build a rugged pipe frame. Mounted a bath tub , on the top. We haul all our wood, deer, moose, bear, gravel, you have to shovel it out. It has been used regularily for at least 15 years. Can't break it. Nice white porcelain finish on it. Complete with drain. Built out of stuff , I had. old 243

I dont have a picture and trailor is at camp. Next time i'm there I will try to remember to get a picture. I forgot to mention . I cut the front skirt off , and mounted it , bolted , at the front. It is long enough to cover the front and about 18 inches of each side. You can pile a real bunch of wood on it. The front has a small board at the top, so you can take your outboard motor as well. If you want to go fishing. Just to transport it. It is fun making stuff, totally, made out of stuff that was laying around. old243

I think one thing to look at is how the bed is in the dump position. I have a poly tub trailer that I use behind my mower like this one:
https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/polar-lg7-lawn-and-garden-trailer?cm_vc=-10 005

It works okay, but when you dump with it attached to mower, the tub never fully empties. The back edge lays flush with the ground. Great if you are trying to rake stuff into it but a pain if you are dumping dirt or rock. Most will come out, but you have to rake or shovel to get it all. The one from the first post, the bed looks high enough to empty a load when dumping

This looks good for dumping:

@mj1angier That's the exact same issue i had with the Polar poly (1400lb model) i had a couple years ago. You had to either shovel or pull forward to allow more of the load out.

Pretty sure this problem will happen with any larger trailer though as the floor height is pretty standard on most of these types of trailers.

Yeah, not so much a height thing as a bed design. Most of the poly tubs types look like they are made that way- either for easy of use raking stuff in or to keep stress off tub when dumping. Only one's that I have seen that do a full dump are metal
