Haven't posted in a while. Cabin is coming a long great. 24x24 3 rooms and a loft. Slowed down the build during the winter. The question I have now is flooring. I wanted to put down wide plank flooring. But my sub-floor is not as flat as it should be. lol So thinking of putting down some water proof Vinyl Flooring. Or even glued down flooring to roll with my uneven floor. (I am not trying to fix the subfloor.) But as of now I am using the cabin only on the weekends. So being off grid there is no heat. What (if any) flooring is best for a uncontrolled heating and cooling environment? Thanks all. Here some pictures of the cabin as of now. Want to see how I built it? I would recommend luxury vinyl plank flooring. Do some reading as they are not all created equal and some are more dimensionally stable than others during temperature fluctuations. They are so easy to install and accommodate less than perfect subfloors pretty well. Plus, if $hit really hits the fan like a massive leak, you can easily take up the planks to do repairs, wipe off both sides of the vinyl and reinstall.

I have had really good luck with $1.10 sqft flooring from a place called Ollies. I have had it in a rental house for 9yrs and looks damn good still. I used it 1yr ago on my unheated back porch with no foam underlayment. Its click lock flooring right on the sub floor. I dont like the squishy feeling of foam under the floor.

Are you getting some buckling where the subflooring sheets meet? Could you belt sand it down a bit?

The place looks great by the way. What pitch is the roof? Does snow stay on it?

Fwiw, my place, sc WI, has a 5 1/2:12 pitch metal roof and snow doesn't stay long on it.

7/12 and it sheds snow great. Thanks for the information. No buckling just the center beam is up a little further then the others. Slight rise to the center of the cabin.

Scissor trusses...those give you lots of head room and room for insulation.

They sure do. Spring when I put the pine on the ceiling and skirting around the cabin. IM sure it will also make a big difference. This year we get the stove cranking and the cabin has reach 70degrees.

I like your cabin very much, where in Vermont are you? I am in NY less than a mile from VT I too am springing the flooring stage of mine. I was contemplating random width t&g pine finished with tung oil.

I am in Whitingham. That would look nice. I think I will put some tile that matches the hearth in front of the door. Then probably vinyl plank flooring. Home depot sells Life proof.

For flooring almost any wood is going to move. I put 3.25in un finished oak in my house. The wood stove really drys things out. Then in the summer my house can get pretty humid. I have some gaps but more peaks at the flooring edges. If you
dont mind that real wood always feels best under foot to me.

Engineered flooring should be more stable but may not wear like wood. I also wouldnt spend big bucks on this type of flooring and expect it to last any longer. When ever I buy this type of flooring I take my key and try to scratch it. If it scratches it I move on. The only flooring I found that passed my key test was $1.10 sqft from Ollie's. Nothing at HD would pass, not even the $3sqft stuff. That $1.10sqft stuff is now 9-10yrs old in a rental house.

What is the brand Name from Ollies? I have never heard of Ollies until this post. I did a search and have one 30 minutes away. It is a clearance store? IM going to go check it out. Thanks so much...

Yes it's kind of like a clearance store. They always seam to have a well stocked plank flooring section. I believe they still had the same stuff I used 9yrs ago when I did my unheated back porch with the same flooring. I chose to not use underlayment on my porch. Its flooring floating right on the osb subfloor. I dont like the squishy feeling of foam under flooring.

I'm not sure on the manufacturer of the flooring. It was cheap and passed my key scratch test. I look at this type of floor as disposable.

We've been thinking vinyl planks for our place as well. Been thinking so long, I think it's actually gotten cheaper. In the interim, we just did floor paint plus rugs so the water would bead up on the OSB and we'd have something warmer under foot.
