I am thinking about doing this from one of the various companies specializing in this. What is considered fair pricing with these, as it varies a lot? Mine has to be 400 ft sq or less. Maybe a solid cabin from the 1800s. Functional and aesthetically pleasing.
What do you think? And is this a sensible choice? Any companies recommended?

Okay. Good. I was hoping that an under 400 ft sq structure might be gotten cheaply. Many sites don't list prices.

Fair price is what you are willing to pay and where you are located. Sensible choice - that depends on your personality. If you like projects, might be a great choice but if you just want to buy a weekend getaway that doesn't require much work, then maybe not.

I am astounded at the price of building materials these days.
I thought maybe this could be a cheaper option plus a form of recycling too.

Join the Log Home Builders Assoc and they will teach you a super easy method to build your own, 400 sq feet would be a snap. You can go to their site and view "members homes". I am a LHBA member, its a lifetime deal, no monthly or annual dues. Its a fee for life. LHBA.com

Watch Barnwood Builders and figure the cost to take one down, haul to the yard, reassemble, replace logs as needed then disassemble and haul to your site and set the logs again. It is not cheap.
One company had one built from logs gleaned from deconstructed cabins and notched. The logs with rafters was around $9,000.00 last I checked for less than 200 square feet.
They can make a great looking cabin, but probably not cheaper.
