I had an underground potable water cistern installed and filled with 350 gallons last summer, but I haven't had the pump electrified yet (scheduling). I unscrewed the top to the fill port and shined a light in there today to check on it.....and the water *appeared* to have had a slight brown tint to it. I watched the water go in at the time and it was clear.

My initial reaction is that it's contaminated somehow, but is there something else that could be going on? Manufacturing residue? Unrealistic expectation (it is opaque and underground afterall - I was expecting to be looking into a pool basically)? I already asked the contractor about shifting, and he said that was very unlikely.

I didn't intentionally inhale/smell, but I didn't notice a smell off-hand, either.

Do you have any steel components in the tank? What did the water look like in the cistern when it was filled?

I wouldn't necessarily know if there were steel components installed, but my guess is no - a reputable local company put it in, so I think they would've known not to do that. And, I didn't think to check the water right after it was put in. I'm going to tie a cup to a rope and drop it in there to get myself a sample to see what it looks like this weekend.

Just get it tested if its suspect.

I pulled a sample out of it today - crystal clear. False alarm!
