Hi I was wondering if anybody tried the following.
Hire a skilled person to fix a cottage, but instead of paying him, let him stay one week extra in the cottage

You just need to find "a skilled person" that does not have a home? Skilled wage per hour X # of hours worked = 7 nights. Maybe if it was a very nice cottage with great location?

Cheap and skilled dont mix. It's one or the other. Why not do some work your self?

Unless you absolutely hate construction work, there is so much valuable knowledge to gain doing it yourself. I've never hired anyone to do anything for me. Sure projects typically take a little longer and maybe even cost the same or more but the knowledge i gain carries over to future projects...plus i usually invest in the tools i need as well.

As a “skilled person “ I often am offered trades for my services ,some I accept ,some I don’t .Last week I traded two days labour for a 2 year old SUV my wife wanted to drive ,in the past I have built these same people a 1/4 million dollar deck ,so they were throwing me a bone and new what they were getting from me .It all depends on the job ,and if it’s a good deal for all involved .

Please learn some communication skills.

The rest of the guys, thank you. I don't have qualification and time, but will look into other options

Sounds like a risky proposition unless you know the person well in advance. Expectations on both sides could easily be misconstrued, and end in an unsatisfactory result. Proceed with caution, or open your wallet!

I don’t think Frank was trying to be rude. He was pointing out that you are potentially under valuing a contractors time. Unless it is a small one day job a week’s worth of vacation rental would not be worth it. I am contractor and if I was on a job for a day the labor alone would be close to $1000. How much would you rent you house on Airbnb for?

Contractors don’t work for wages so you can’t compare to what an employee would bring home in a week

I though if you meet a person in advance, maybe the risk will be lesser

Maybe I should learn some skiils and become a contractor! .
I don't have a cottage myself. I am renting cottages once in awhile. In beautiful location on the lake. And some of them would benefit from improvement, and then they could charge more. Some owners are older people and cannot do work themselves.
I was thinking if we could connect people who are in need of fixing a cottage and skilled people who would want do do a bit of work and afterwards spend time in the cottage country for free, it would help everybody. Wouldn't it?

I am sure there are people out there that might be interested but I would be surprised if you could find a steady reliable supply of those people.

Yes, maybe you are right. If contractors are paid that much, they probably would need a month of free cottage country experience for a day of work

Sure, thank you for feedback. I assume women are a bit more sensitive to the communication language.
I was just wondering if connecting skilled people with cottage owners will help each party.

Well, I'm sure about that, you sound like a reasonable guy.
Anyways, back to the topic. If anybody thinks it's not a bad idea to do some work in a cottage for a day or two and then have your family enjoy the cottage for another week, let me know. I would love to hear some feedback. So we can make something useful

I was more thinking of free service exchange, so cottage owner doesn't need to pay to the contractor, and contractor doesn't need to pay to stay in the cottage afterwards

There are a lot of people who have small or large cabins, but they cant progress with it on their own for different reasons

Yes, your question of trading cottage rental time in exchange for labor is a fair question to ask others if they've done the same. However, i don't think this is the place to solicit those people...there are other places for those services.

Hi Willi1e
I'm not trying to solicit skilled people for sure. I just asked contact from a guy who did it (Bruces) because I would love to hear detail of how it goes what are the issues.
So let's just stick to the exchange idea. That's exactly what I wanted. I would appreciate the feedback. I already got some. Some people think it's a waist of time, but others think it's not a bad idea depending on the deal

I have had help that I didn’t pay. It has been friends that I keep well fed and well oiled with cold beer after hard days work. They are also welcome to use my cabin when ever they want. I may be possible to link people need work done with people who have the skills and tools but I think it will always work better with friends and family rather than strangers. I am also hesitant to hire contractors I don’t know for my cabin because I don’t like advertising all my stuff and the fact that the place is unoccupied

Thank you for information. Capable friends is a great option. But for people who dont have this option, I guess there should be some procedure in place to build up trust with contractor...
