Apparently there is an app called Audacity that will make an MP3 recording from your computer audio output, something like that?

Anyone familiar? I thought I might record some of the music I listen to on Youtube and put them on the player I have in the shop. I believe some places sell the songs so maybe it's not legal?

There are browser plugins which will capture sound (and video) from websites.

I think that copying like that is looked upon as stealing the tune if you have not actually paid for the song. However, you as an individual will probably never be prosecuted as long as you don't try to profit from the stolen recordings, as there are bigger fish to fry.

I have friends and family who are musicians and software writers who are damaged when people steal their music or software by using unpaid copies.

Subscribe to Pandora or some other service that allows sunscribers to download tunes to their device for play when there is no internet or you don't want to use your mobile data. That is what I do. Or buy some music and support the artists. (When the membership lapses so does access to those tunes)

Thanks guys. I did a little more reading and yes it is apparently stealing. I guess I will look at Pandora. It's not the money, I'd gladly pay a buck or two per song, it's more just having another web site to understand, subscription, password, notifications, advertising spam, blah blah.

Maybe I'll try running another antenna up a tree, like I have at the cabin, and pull in FM.

I used to record cassettes of the tunes I liked off the radio and copied some of my records or tapes, all for my use.
That recording was a normal thing back then, sounds like it wouldnt be now.

Generally if you have bought a legal tape, CD, or digital tune, you can make copies for your own use. No gifting any part to anyone else. If you sell or give away the original then the copies become illegal. No idea how it is looked at if you lose the original. Probably becomes illegal to have a copy.

I like Pandora. You can save lists, they have a very good selection. There is a free version to try that lacks a few features and has adverts. I use Pandora on my phone as well as the PC that is connected to my TV and good speaker system.

Making a copy for self use is okay, but letting someone else use the original or another copy at the same time is is not okay. The paid services, like Pandora, only permit one user on the pais account at one time. So, if I have it playing on my phone it won't let the service play on the PC unless I stop the playback on the phone. They pay a royalty fee each time a tune is played

I'm a sometime musician who grew up listening to pirated music as a cool(?) and rebellious teenager. I then made (and was sometimes even paid for) music myself in the pre-streaming era. And have been boringly quiet and middle-aged in recent years.

The exact legality depends on jurisdiction, but I feel morally OK making digital copies of music I've bought for my own personal use. As long as no-one except me is playing them, and they're only in use in one place at one time. I've actually ripped all my CDs and play them digitally at home, cabin, car.

I wouldn't feel right grabbing a bootleg recording off YouTube or Pandora of music whose makers are being paid "per listen" via ads or subscription. Then I'd be ripping the artists off.

The streaming services actually pay the artists very little; it's a scandal. As a result, I do cheerfully if not quite legally use the browser extensions others have mentioned to make my offline/portable copies of tunes -- but only of indie musicians that I personally support in another way. E.g. Patreon, kickstarter towards their recording project, etc. That way, I've already helped them more than they'd every get as their share of my on-line listens, and I don't particularly care if YouTube gets a bit richer or not.

I think it's a great business idea to make the same app for people.
