I’m thinking about buying a 12’ x 20’ prefab shed to be used as a bunkhouse. I would like to place it on a raised pier foundation with a gravel base. Typically, delivery is by truck and placed on a gravel foundation. I would like to place the shed on piers with 2” x 10” joists running perpendicular to the shed skids. There are (5) 4” x 4” skids running the 20’ length of the shed. I need suggestions of a reasonable way to jack up the shed and once in place, build the foundation. I’m thinking about (5) piers on each side.

Suggestions appreciated.

Thanks.....

Question 1: will this be a 'legal' and permitted (if required) and/or require approvals and inspections structure? Ie, there are a number of code (read-safety) issues regarding the build, several of which have been the subject(s) of very recent threads.
Q 2: Have you looked at those?

gcrank1, yes, it will be a legal structure. No problems there. I have a permit.

Then I think you are going to have to go by the code in your jurisdiction as the primary ref. Check that to see if they give you options and float em by here

So it depends on how it's delivered. Our shed/ cabin came on two different systems- one was a high tech guided lift called a mule that they used a remote system to drive it around. Another one cam on a trailer that would move both forward/ back and left/ right on it own.

This is a mule set up (not mine)- https://www.horizonstructures.com/mule-delivery

So they can move them into tight spots and also lift them up to about 3 ft

Can you have them build it on 6x6 skids? 4x4 that are 20ft long can be like a wet noodle.

A single 2x10 can be tippy on end so you may need two or more. And at that point how much more would it cost to just run the 2x10s right next to the skids?

Also what size are the floor joists? Ours are 2x6s and prety darn bouncy in a 10' wide building, skids in about 12in from each side.

mj1angier: I looked at the link..... cool equipment. I'll see if the shed company has a mule. TY.

Brettny: Good point about the 6 x 6s. I'll see what options they have. I can't visualize what you're saying:

A single 2x10 can be tippy on end so you may need two or more. And at that point how much more would it cost to just run the 2x10s right next to the skids?

Can you elaborate? Thx.

I was just reading my prior posts and now I understand what you meant! I did do as you suggest, I put (2) 2x8s on either side of the outside 4x4 skids that came on the pre-fab cabin. The floor joists are 2x6s on 12inch centers and is solid.
