Right now we are using an enclosed cargo trailer as our "garage" at our property. I don't have enough room for all of our toys, tools, etc. so i need a different solution. Given the high prices of lumber, i'm leaning towards a metal shed...specifically this one made by Versatube.

Has anyone built one of these or had experiences with them? Looking for pros/cons/watchouts or alternate suggestions in similar price range.

The base will be gravel, not a slab.

I know of several that were assembled in the area and they are still standing after 10+ years. They can be assembled in a day or two.

The price of the metal panels has increased with lumber. I am price shopping now for liner panels to finish my pole barn ceiling and Menards was $1000 higher than a direct to consumer metal supplier for the same material.

Maybe buy the frame from Menards, but shop around for the siding.

Yeah, panel pricing seems to be around $4ft from Menards. I don't even know where else to buy panels like that from here in NE Wi. Guess i'd have to do some googling.

Ice/snow sheets dont just slide off at odd times like my cabin roof.....
Lots of them around south central WI and I havent seen them caved in, though we arent getting the big snows like we used to.

I have structure similar to that, but more basic. The frame is made of 2"x2" square galvanized steel. It only has a metal roof with no sides or ends. It covers my boat slip and acts as a canopy. It sits right on the edge of the lake out in the open (as you probably guessed) and catches a LOT of wind (it is bolted down to a heavy dock). It is very solid. I seldom even hear a creak out of it. It's about 12 years old. No problems so far. We don't get big snow falls here, maybe a 12" storm once every few years. I suppose you could add roof reinforcement to yours if you are worried about heavy snow. Last year we had to rebuild the boat dock the canopy sits on. We raised the structure up, put logs under the frame and rolled the structure up the hill and out of the way and then rolled it back onto the dock when the project was done. The structure took the movement without any problems. We did have 40 mph winds when the structure was sitting on the hillside. The structure never moved even though it was not tied down. It's not the prettiest structure, but I have no complaints.

Do you have supply houses that sell building materials? A local small lumber yard dosnt even sell roofing or siding because theres a roofing and siding place across the street and they can always beat there price. A different local lumber yard that is near our property had metal pannels for $1.90 a linear ft pre pandemic.

I was listening to the radio at our property one night and herd an ad for a place that only does metal roofing. I called and they beat everyone's price along with only having a 24hr leed time and can cut to any length. . This means they bend there own. Also I was looking for upper and lower gambrel roof trim that isnt super nornal.

So i'm leaning towards a 20x18 Versatube unit. Question i have is on the garage door. The design defaults to a 16x7 door. For some reason i don't know that i want that wide of a door. While i agree it would make for easy in/out of toys and such, i think it might be overkill. I don't plan on using it for vehicles, just ATV's, maybe tractor, etc.

Curious if anyone has been in this scenario and what your deciding factor was.

Does anybody ever build a garage or pole building actually 'big enough'? Or a door too wide?

Agree...but i guess i'm contemplating the benefit of a wider door vs. more wall space for racking. Like i said, aside from the potential ease of getting things in and out, what other benefit does a wider door have?
