What? Not even 1 reply? OK, it was a pretty weird post. Anyhow, I'd thought I'd update it with some pics of the finished project. Maybe it all makes sense now.
For the last year and a half, we've been playing with ideas for access to the loft in our cabin. We were hot on a spiral ladder for a while, and nixed that. I was pretty much resigned to making a ladder that stored flat against the wall when my dear wife came up with this idea.
The first 2 steps are a stool, which can be used other places in the cabin and stores under the landing box. The treads on the stool hinge so the stool can be used for some light storage. The first landing doubles as a table between the 2 chairs. The only way to get steps between the landings was to go with an alternating tread design. All the rises are 8" and runs are also 8", though I made the alternating treads 9" deep as I couldn't see hacking an inch off a nice 9" wide 5/4 board.
The wood came from a local sawmill. Covid pricing in effect ($3.75 a board foot for white pine...probably $1.75 a year ago) but it was a small project, so not a huge deal.. The 4x4s were douglas fir from a box store as the lumber mill didn't have any 4x4s.

I didnt even see the post the first time around.
Looks good to me, short of taking up the whole wall for full stairs I think this is a great compromise and easier to use than a ladder.
Might take a few runs to get comfortable with it. I might have mounted a grab handle on the wall above the first landing, about the same height as the second landing. So you can step > step > grab while you pivot on the first landing before you can reach up the grab the railing above you.
Basically right where the lower right corner of the picture on the wall is in the tape photo.

Good idea. Any railing/handles are yet to be determined. That could take another year.

Dang, you better be wide awake when using that ladder!! Someone my size (6'5" 275lbs) wouldn't wanna do that without being 100% focused!!

Not so bad guys! But we aren't a big people, so works fine for us.
Compared to a "real" staircase, there is none. That's why there are codes for "real" houses so they work safely for the majority of people. For a "tiny" house/cabin, though, sometimes you need to get a little creative.
We were using a ladder for access for the last year or so which made me pretty sure I didn't want a ladder solution. The alternating stairs work much better than a ladder, though they are a little weird. The loft is occasional use and some storage. We have a separate bedroom.

You gotta do what makes sense for you obviously. I think i would've turned the bottom section 90 degrees so at least everything was in a straight line. I love the idea of a tiny house/cabin, but considering how tight things feels for me in our 30' 5th wheel, i don't think i could handle a tiny place.

Yeah the loft increases the area quite a bit. Good spot for grandkids to sleep if visiting. I did try to talk my wife into finding a stuffed bobcat and hang it climbing up on the upper landing. She's not buying.
