Had to jump start the dump truck this morning, used one of those pocket sized Lithium starter packs. Amazing, from won't even spin to starting 10 seconds after hookup. 8 liter V10.
How do those things pack so much punch and deliver it so fast?

That is awesome. I have a nice long pair of jumper cables.
I think I recall seeing somewhere you can use a drill battery in a pinch. I will have to do a little research to see if that's just a myth.

My understanding is that the lith has 'dense power'; ie, lots packed in, and as we know from the solar stuff with LFP, lith can take a fast C rate charge and discharge. Using those jump-start packs arent you supposed to hook up the bat and let the lith pack dump amps quick into it, then the 'topped-up' starting bat can spin and start the vehicle? That is, the little jump-pac isnt doing it, just enabling the vehicle bat to recover enough to do it? Kinda like when I put my old 50a boost charger on for 10 min. and it works.

What kind of jump box was it, if you don't mind me asking.
I've been curious about them, but never heard a first hand story.
For some of us. A jump box is a necessity. It would be nice to not have to pack around a heavy jump box if you could get by with a light weight one.

Ive heard that the tow truck drivers, etc, that get calls for jump starts carry these thing now and give them a go first before anything else. You might ask at your local garages/repair places about what they use.
I think they often come with USB recharge ports too.
Had considered one for easily portable cabin power but they are not deep cycle, actually not a lot of 'amp hours' in the traditional FLA battery sense, but made for quick heavy power.

Darz, I have two. The Viking, the one I used yesterday, I bought at Harbor Freight a couple of years ago, about $50 on sale. Then, of course, I got one for Christmas, that I have also used several times, same result.
They do have flashlights, USB charger etc. stuff built in if you're shopping around.
Also have one of the older, non-lithium, briefcase size jumper boxes. It suited me fine but it's weak now. The lithium ones theoretically should last much longer.

I carry one of these on my snowmobile as it is electric start with no pull rope option other than wrapping a cord around the clutch. I've used it more on vehicles never on the snowmobile.

They are really a godsend if you have a bunch of utility vehicles that sit for periods of time. Or leave the lights on..
Sounds like gcrank has the reason they work so well, able to dump large current quickly into weak LA bats. Once my dump truck started yesterday and ran for 5 minutes it started on it's own the rest of the day. No reason to buy a new battery that will just sit.

But even if one uses the vehicle a good bit dont count on the alt. to fully recharge that heavily depleted battery. The no-start is a warning sign something is amiss; ie, bat going out, bat not getting charged well die to corroded bat terminals, parasitic draw, etc.
I always use the heads-up opportunity to clean the bat terminals and get it on the charger for 'overnight'. Works for me, ymmv
