Well my summer 2022 building season is now well underway. Fortunately I was able to use a warm spring to my full advantage, but took the week of Memorial Day off to really get things going vertical.

I started off the trip by absolutely destroying my knee of my trailer tongue which slowed me down for a few days. Luckily I had a few tasks which lent themselves to standing more than kneeling for the first day or two.

I got started by building my interior staircase to the second floor under the watchful direction of my daughter (Pic 1 & 2).

After that I did my two long exterior walls on the second floor, and got the third wall up shortly to help secure them in the increasing afternoon winds that seemed to pick up throughout each day. (Pic 3 & 4)

Next I got my West view wall up - this was a fun one, with two monster 4x8' windows in it that create quite the dramatic view. Again, under the watchful eye of my young designer. (Pic 5 & 6)

Once sheathed, I finally got the first real view out of what will be my master bedroom, and boy oh boy did it not disappoint! (Pic 7)

After what seemed like a long time coming (although realistically not too long at all) I am finished building exterior walls. (Pic 8) I can finally turn my attention to other exterior elements - the change of pace is quite welcome.

I got the floor over the entry, which will serve as storage space under the simple sloped roof on that section. I have cantilevered the joists to support the eave of the roofline which will cover the main stairway to the cabin entrance. (Pic 9)

I also got started on the walkway deck that will provide access to the main entrance, and wrap around to access the deck on the front of the cabin. Stairs for both ends have yet to be built. Unfortunately I ran out of time to finish decking the walkway, so I'll have to grab it next time. (Pic 10) I was quite pleased with the fit and finish of my grating I integrated into the deck right in front of my main door. I nabbed this out of the dumpster at work - can't beat the price on that!

And our last day up there my folks ended coming up, so I took full advantage of my dads massive stature (he's 6'6" with about an 8ft wingspan) to help me hang 3 sides of T1-11 around the first story of the cabin. It was so nice to finally have some assistance with the project! We also got the west wall wrapped in tyvek which was much easier with two people. (Pic 11 & 12)

Plan is to go back up in a week, for a week, so there should be lots more good progress on the way! Additional photos in follow up posts.

Happy building everyone!

A little late to update, but I took another week off work two weeks ago and managed to make some more progress with some beautiful weather. Got rafters and roof on the entry and walkway, front windows and siding on the west wall, and 2nd story interior walls framed.

Going up again for a week over 4th of July to hopefully wrap up everything on the second story exterior, trusses, roof and metal!

Hope y'all are having a great summer.

Well the day has finally come - We got the trusses/roof on and final exterior elements to be DRIED IN! Very excited.

Just got back from 9 days at the cabin, and made a ton of progress from last time. I rented a towable lift for a week which aided the installation of the 2nd story siding and windows. On the 4th I had some family and a buddy come by to help with the truss installation, which we wrapped up in just 2.5hrs thanks to the lift, a very handy picking bracket I made, and pre-installing my blocking for the trusses (highly recommend this approach).

From there I got the roof sheathed and metal on. Also finished up some odd bits of siding/trim as well. Also got soffits/vents installed and boxed in. Had another buddy come up later in the week and we got the floor insulated as well. Now that things are dried in I was able to turn my attention towards the last few interior details like the washroom, and the bar for the kitchen.

Next up will be electrical and insulation, which is exciting to be on to something new.

Thanks for following along on my adventure! It has been fun learning a lot, and sharing.

Updates will probably be a little less frequent, as I take my foot off the gas a bit to rest and recover. Upcoming work will be a little less visually exciting too (electrical and insulation) so I'll probably wait until that is mostly wrapped up.

Take care ya'll!

Shoot - My shop is nearly as big as your house, and my shed is half the size of your cabin. Pretty sure this means I have too much stuff Some day I'll downsize, but they had better stop making new cool tools in the meantime or it will never happen!

Bradish, the build is looking excellent! I am noticing the first of the tree leaves turning yellow, so winter will be here soon! Are you going to be ready to have heat this winter? I may have missed it earlier in the thread, but I imagine a combo of a toyostove and a wood stove?

Thank you!

And I haven't really mentioned it, but yes there will be a wood stove, and then I will have two 30K Propane wall heaters, one on the main floor and one on the second floor.

I have yet to put any of them in. I am getting the woodstove from a friend. I have yet to cut the roof penetration for the stove pipe yet, as I don't have the stove in hand at this point. I will be renting the same lift again to help with that process as well as tie up a few loose ends before winter hits. My goal is to have viable heat in the cabin by Labor Day. It should be wired and insulated by that time too, so it will be 'livable' which is a big plus!

The woodstove will be the main source of heat. The propane heaters will be used just to warm the place up fast on spur of the moment winter trips, and maintain heat overnight when needed.

Well it's been about 3 months since my last post, and I've been pretty busy since then. Don't have pictures of everything (or not interesting enough to look at) but in the past 3 months I have knocked off a pretty decent checklist:

• All electrical run and terminated. Panel finaled. Hardline to gen shed in service.
• Walls insulated and vapor barrier (R21)
• Floor insulated and sheeted (R30)
• Attic sheetrocked and blown insulated (R50)
• Main Stairs built
• BBQ deck & roof built (Still needs stairs)
• All exterior trim installed
• Eave and entry soffits installed
• Kitchen cabinets installed
• Wood stove installed & chimney piped (Praise the Lord for heat!)
• Main floor 80% T&G installed
• Kids room sheetrock hung upstairs
• Storage area OSB sheeted
• Propane piping installed and pressure tested
• Fire pit area installed
• Parking pad expanded for snow plowing

I've got a buddy coming this weekend to spray foam my rim joist on the main floor, then I'll be able to finish up my T&G downstairs, and get some flooring in place!

Hopefully I'll be ready to settle in for a long winter nap soon! Forecast is calling for our first snow later today, which is 2-3 weeks early compared to normal. Lots of little things to tidy up, but the majority of the work outside is complete.

Enjoy the photos.

Not sure why this site always wants to rotate my photos. I've unsuccessfully tried to fix them too many times before. I guess we'll have to live with it. Anyways, heres a few more photos.
