I am wanting to build my next cabin with a living roof and I would prefer to use a bit of an older way of doing it and NOT settle on something like EDPM, PVC or RPE. Looking at a way that was done in the 70's, these guys are using asphalt rooled roofing, covered in plastic cement or salvage cement, then pasting a layer of 6-mil poly black plastic across the tacky cement. Then comes the wooden border and sod. Rootlets won't grow through the poly but can grow through the cement and asphalt. Some people apply a second layer of 6-mil poly as an insurance. Has anyone any comments or advice on this particular method? Thanks.

I expect in times past they used what they had. Some probably used the best that there was at the time. Im guessing if they had the stuff we have now they would use it to.
A roof is too important a part of the structure to use poor materials or techniques unless you are recreating some kind of 'historically correct' building.

There is an expanding mesh type fabric that people use to stabilize soil/roads with. It expands kind of like a slinky and you fill the vertical voids with material.
