I have a question on running ripped 2x4s vertically for siding. I like the look of thin strips running vertically. Looks like if you ripped 2x4s in half it would be about 20c a linear foot. You think they would just bow out and bend or stay fairly straight?
I think I can find rough cut 1x4 round here for about 3 bucks each. I could probably shop around.
I dont mind the additional work just wondering if its feasible.

I see 1x4s are like 3 bucks each so might be worth saving the trouble of ripping stuff for some extra cost but my question remains on the stability of the product.

Might depend on the moisture of the 2x4s before you rip.

Yeah they would be kiln dried. Im sure moisture varies a bit still though.

the way they are bent and twisted in the stores, I would think you will have a lot of bending and twisting unless you can screw them all together.

Seems like there must be a better way to get the look you want.

You would likely find Rough Cut Pine or Cedar planks a heap load easier & cheaper in the end. If Pine, you'll want to treat/paint it right away or it will blacken whereas Cedar will Silver.

Plank on Plank or Board & Batten works well and can be quite economical and attractive as well. DO REMEMBER to use Galvanised Nails otherwise you'll get "Tear Stains" streaking down the wood quickly from the rust/corrosion.

PS: My siding is Live Edge Easter White cedar planks, no tear stains due to Galvanised nails. Seen far too many folks forget that detail and then in 3 or less years they have to Paint/Stain to hide it. Accompanied quite colourful vocabulary, I might add.

Have you ripped a fair bunch of 2x4s? Crosscutting is one thing, ripping quite another.
Imo ripping enough to side a cabin is way more dangerous work than I want to do.

Lot of good points here. Think G crank has a good point on the safety as well. Probably just a couple hundred more bucks for rough cut from the mill.

On my workshop build last fall I bought a bundle of rough-cut 1x10 pine from the local sawmill at 58 cents/ft. There were a few sketchy knots here and there that would need to be glued or sections removed, but overall very decent quality that could be used for rustic siding if needed.
