I did a bunch of defensible space clearing on the hillside below the cabin this summer, and noticed there's a clear shot down to the shop. I ran a rope today, makes it a heck of lot easier to climb and descend in the soft dirt and duff. Normal route is via an 800' switchback driveway. I go back and forth numerous times, usually with the yard truck as there's always something to bring.

I'd love to come up with a way to use this newfound path, and be able to haul tools and junk. I could probably smooth it enough for wheels, even a track. And I have enough electrical power at the cabin for some sort of winch. It's very steep, something like 45 degrees.

Any ideas on how I can make something work, overhead line, tracks, winch? Here is one idea I sketched out.

And/or the dog will need to come in pieces so you can adjust it's weight to match the load you are taking up. Regardless, the breaking system will be critical in a setup like this to keep the load from sailing down the hillside into your shop.

You meaning braking right?

Yeah I think a clutch or brake of some sort would be required.

I'm not married to this idea.. to equalize the uphill and downhill effort would be great though. I could even imagine a pedal cart of some sort. What do they do in mines?

If all else fails I'll just dig stairs. Be about 12 flights though..

Yeah especially since he can only eat when the cart is up the hill.

And don't stand underneath after he's eaten.

I have some winches but would be slow. Could mount bigger pulleys maybe, much less load than pulling a truck out of the mud.

Our town is built around a popular fishing river that in places has steep banks. Many people use trolleys to carry fish back up the hill. The best designs I've seen are trolleys that ride on the handrails of the staircases people put in.

If you want to add some power to the system, I could envision a circular loop of rope through the rail system that is fed through a crab pot puller. They are generally a fairly compact and low geared unit. The nicer units have multi speed and fwd/rev capabilities. You'd have to size it accordingly, but they are known to be able to pull heavy loads and run off 12v DC.

Sounds good, but those crab pot pullers are about $500. Thanks!

How much is 12 flights of stairs though?

Our place is well above the lake. we built a pully cable system. Works great. Check out our video for some
ideas. good luck with you project.

Nice set up O lakeside.
I have seen a couple set ups with old mini bike frames. Gas motors. Centrifugal clutch. Worked pretty well.
Paulz. Maybe you can use the RM 80 for a power source. 🤔
I really like your hand drawn blueprint. Sometimes you don't need CAD to show whatcha wanna do. 👍

Yeah that winch setup is tits. I took a look at what I have on the shelf, one 12v, one 110, at 10 meters a minute. Too slow I think but I could probably rig up a jack shaft with car wheel to pull the cart rope (and me hanging on).
