Why can’t the mods weed out all this spam? Why can’t they implement a waiting period of some kind so people can’t join and post new threads the same day?

They also have normal lives away from here?

Waiting periods are annoying to bona fide new members and just delay the spam posts from today to a later day. Some spammers will signup and wait up to a week or more before posting their spam. At least that is what I have seen elsewhere.

I get that they have lives out side of here but this forum seems to have far more of this crap than any other I frequent. Just wondering what the difference is. How do others combat this problem?

Why complain about a free site. Pretty sure it’s a one man show and he always cleans up that crap in a day or so

I guess I am more curious than complaining as to why this site is plagued with spam and many others aren’t. You are right the spam really doesn’t affect me in any real negative way. I suppose I should have worded my original post a little better. I mean no ill will

Irrigation Guy,
They are probably at the cabin finishing up some project. Ginny quit at noon and his batteries are dead. Saw the cooler and said..... Well, you know what he said!
The spam is irritating and maybe I should only come here once a day to get some tips.
But? I don't
Hope everyone has had a productive and joy filled summer. Maybe Mother Nature will be kind and give me a few more weeks there and a early spring.
To all. Thanks for your expertise.

Good thread to hijack.

(Paulz) So once a month, I have to take the wife to the mall so she can go shopping. But I'm not waiting 4+ hours in the parking lot. I go back home and when she is ready, she calls me on the cell. Yesterday she spent 4.5 hours. I'm thinking she will come out with at least 4 bags. Nope. Just her backpack. I'm like honey, you were in there 4.5 hours and didn't buy anything? (shock) :-o No she bought 2 pairs of pants, put them in the back pack. We get home and she gives me the fashion show. Strips and puts on what she bought and does kind of a model walk and turns, and fanny wiggle. She takes off these black pants and tosses them to me to put on the second pair. I look at the tag and it says suggested retail 69.99. Hi Ho credit card. But then I find the store tag and it says 15.99. She's a good shopper. Paulz, Target Husbands is a great idea. Funny video. Thanks. Dave

Small site, simple set-up for a forum, owner operated on his own time and nickel I expect. Something like this, started with enthusiasm over the idea and topic, can turn into a headache for the founder then suddenly....poof. It aint easy being the only one wearing all the hats.

Ha. Two weeks ago was my wife's birthday. I promised the whole day to her. Where to, the mall of course, three of em. Even went in Bed Barh and Beyond, never thought I would. Target, Ross... The day was not a total loss however, as even Home Depot got a walk through. And of course she found something there.

Yeah Target Husbands pretty funny.

Haven't noticed any spam, besides my own. Good job getting after it.

My wife's b-day tomorrow. She isnt a 'maller' anymore (thank God!). Think Ive got more than half a chance she might say,"can we go to the cabin today?".
Do know for sure we'll get a nice dinner tomorrow night, the supperclub down the road does a 'free on your b-day' meal, grill yer own Premium steaks.
(wonder what kind of Spam this one'll generate?)

I don't think I have been to a mall in at least 5yrs. Unless you count dicks that's connected to one. Everything they sell there they also sell online (except for guns/ammo) and i have better things to do that wait on line, drive there/back and walk around a store looking for something they dont have. Thankfully she also feels the same and covid hit that home real hard.

Sorry but I hate retail stores, free returns and shipping are nearly everywhere now

There is forum software called Bulletin Board but it costs money. The new person is on probation for a couple of months where their posts are approved before they show up in public. When their posts are shown to be typical contributors/participants, they are removed from probation. So you never see spam. On the Polaris forums, we had six moderators to keep up with all the traffic. The BB software was paid for by ATV vendors who got their own forum to advertise new stuff, sales, etc. We don't have 25,000 members to support an operation like that. I think we will be fine. We have a couple of constant mods who will mow the grass and clean up the litter.

First spammer deleted (annaw...). They hit this forum twice (in case you need a plumber in Singapore). Forensic trace of IP shows location as Romania. European spam records show they have hit a company in Amsterdam four times last month.

Reminder: Never click the link they post.

Good work Dave. I noticed a couple of threads I started, and have been dormant, recently got spammed. The burlap for example which I think is still up, maybe not spam? Hope I'm not a specific target.

"Then I caught it in some field staples to stay in place." - I think it's a fare bet English is their first language looking at this sentence.

Dave, we like to torment them with some anti spam replys, so let us have a little fun first, then toss them out on their caboose. I never click on their links.

No point, there isn't a human behind the spam, just a bot. They don't care if you read it or expect replies or even care if the links are clicked. It's all about page ranking, the more pages with links to their sites the higher they get in the search engine results. Delete them immediately and they don't get what they want.
