I just added an 8’x20’ deck onto a cabin I just moved. Originally it had a smaller deck with a metal roof, metal was screwed directly to rafters without any insulation or underlayment. Owner screwed stained 1x10 pine to bottoms of rafters as a ceiling/bird blocking. It is 6 years old and didn’t show signs of condensation drips on rafters, probably from the pine ceiling which insulated it somewhat. I’m not wanting to use 1x10’s as a ceiling on deck and leave it open but am concerned with condensation drips if I don’t insulate....but all the fanfold and 4x8 insulation panels I can find have writing/logo’s on underside. Options that I can think of are 1) use synthetic roof underlayment it’s black underneath 2) skip the insulation and put up with drips 3) buy more pine and install a ceiling 4) open to suggestions! Thanks from central Illinois

I have an exposed metal roof on my 10x24’ deck and there is no condensation at all .Unless you heat the deck ,you will be just fine .

Condensation needs differing Temps to form. Open is just fine. Think about all the farm buildings with just wood frames and steel.

Hope this helps!

If the underside of the deck and the top side of the roof are the same temperature, there can be no condensation.

You very much can get condensation on the underside of the metal roof over an otherwise open deck. I know, as it happened to mine just the other weekend. Doesn't happen a lot, and it's not enough water dripping off of it for me to worry about, but it does happen.

It can happen but dosnt really matter because the underside is open to the breeze and general outside.

With roughly same temps topside vs underside and the open porch, moving air, should be a non issue.
