I have a previous thread with my projects on it, but I figured I’d start a new one. Almost two years ago, my cabin burned down and it’s taken awhile to catch up on all the loss. Just dried in (well sorta) my new cabin yesterday, just as the first snow hit.

It’s a 10’x10’ with a 5’ porch and a loft space. The tall roof has been a pain to deal with, but it will pay off when the big snows come. Just have the metal roofing and chinking left, and a few minor finishing touches.

I am so glad to see you doing this! Dick Proenneke would approve of that build in progress! Did you get that chinking material that you were looking for?

I know you know how lucky we are to live in a place like we do! Enjoy!

Looking good! Glad you are able to recover from your loss. The snow has come earlier this year then it has in quite a while.

I'm also rushing to try and finish a roof but I may just throw plastic over the whole thing and wait until later in the winter when we typically get long stretches of clear weather.

Yeah, got the chinking materials at Spenard builders, though they only had two different colors, haha, but you take what you can get, right?

-10 degrees this morning. Figured it was a good day to take a break and upload some more pics of the cabin build.

I have pictures starting from mid-September. It took about 8 of us one month to complete from ground up (not counting my two years of clearing land and prepping the logs)

I used treated posts buried 5’ in the ground for a foundation. About 45 12’ logs were used for the walls, plus about 500 square feet of milled boards for roof, deck, and floor. All salvaged beetle kill spruce. Probably cut down 3 trees for every 1 usable tree.

Overall, I think I used only about 20 gallons of gas, and 10 gallons of diesel for this build, 4 buckets of chinking, 6 rolls of R-19 insulation, a bunch of timber bolts, nails and screws, roofing tin and wood stove was already on the property. Over all cost was only about $1600-$2000

It’s rustic, but in a fly-out property, I can’t ask for much more, and am absolutely in love with my new home.

Nice work Homestead!

You are making me feel both jealous and lazy

I wrapped mine up in September knowing I wouldn't make it to having the roof on by snowfall. Kind of wish I had pushed on, but such is life.

Looks like a true Alaskan cabin! What neck of the woods are you in? I'm down in South Central.

Stay warm out there.

I barely made it with this roof. In fact, I was installing the roof cap right as the first snow started falling.

I’m in South central as well, in the hills near the upper Yentna river.

I’m so glad you have been able to rebuild! You did a good job prepping those logs. I have always hated peeling the bark off of dead trees so I know you worked hard at it. Congratulations!
