Hi guys I’m thinking of buying a wood stove for my cabin this week. I’m in northern Ontario and my cabin is 16x24. I plan on getting r20 in my walls and ceiling with r40. I’m looking at this stove here https://www.drolet.ca/en/products/stoves/deco-nano-wood-stove/
Only thing that concerns me is that it says it has a 5hr burn time. I don’t want to get up in the middle of the night freezing. Thoughts?

Tough with the 2020 regs. This one only tamps down to 12K BTU, but has a 1.55 CF firebox.

My F100 has a 0.86 CF firebox, and tamped down to 7700 BTU..... So about the same ratio of firebox size to minimum BTU.... So far I find its OK... and about 5 hours out of mine seems about right.

My opinion: With R20 and R40 at 16x24, I think your risk is more likely cooking yourself out! Having a 1.5 CF firebox ain't bad.... I've got a relative with a 24x32 cabin with an uninsulated slab, and he's finding his similar sized Osburn (same manufacturer) is enough, and the place holds heat well enough that he's still warm enough when time to wake up.

Theres no way I would buy any stove with a 1.5cuft fire box. You can always build a smaller fire, cant add more wood when its full.

Dont look at sqft heating capacity look more at burn time.

With 2020 EPA regs, you may not be able to damp the fire down as much. So a bigger firebox might just give you a higher "low" setting, and burn times will not necessarily increase.

Look at the low BTUs on the 2020+s...not nearly as many that will go under 15K BTU at all.

I have a Flame Int'l XVR-II. The model is now discontinued and updated. This stove in my 500 square foot home with Cathedral Ceilings can cook me within 1 hour ! There are not a lt of options for a smaller stove really.

Flame International is owned by SBI Co out of Montreal. They make very respectable products and the pricing can be quite good if you shop around... Ideally, best time to buy is in spring when stores do not want to store stock, I got mine for almost 50% off by doing so...

The current Flame Replacement that matches my stove is here: http://www.flame-intl.com/product.aspx?CategoId=1&Id=398

NOTE, This Stove like mine has a Flat Top ! I made sure of that so I could use Cooking Grill on it IF required. Being up (Algonquin Park Area) here I can get snowed in for days and it is always best to have backups for the unknown situations.

Link to the Cast Iron Griddle Top by SBI. I have it and it really is a good thing to have.

You may want to look here at the Main SBI site which links to their various brands...

Hope it helps, Good Luck.

Our cabin is in Northern Alberta and I just installed the insulation this weekend (R21 walls, R25 roof). We got this stove on clearance at CanadianTire.
https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/drolet-high-efficiency-classic-epa-wood-stove-with -blower-0642894p.html

It will definitely cook us out of the cabin if we run it on high. We choose not to install a flue dampener and just use air control (as per manufacturer instructions).

Burn time on low is no where near 8 hours.. More like 4. However, the cabin holds the heat well and we are not freezing, but do need to fill it up in the middle of the night.

Bite the bullet. Get the Blaze King Princess.
Depending on regulations at your location it should be available in with or without the catalytic.
Our works to perfection. Our cabin was 20'x20' and is now 20'x40'. It worked great in both sizes and will hold a fire for at least 8hrs at -40 C

Good point, the BK, with a cat, will burn more than overnight according to a lot of hearth.com members.

Several friends have Blaze King stoves in their cabins. They easily go all night on one load of wood.

A blaze king would be amazing but I believe they are over $2000

We got the Blaze King Sirocco last fall.... more than satisfied. It is the smallest of the BK stoves, yes ~$2,000 but worth every penny. Our cabin is 22' x 26' with a high cathedral ceiling. I admit we use windows to help regulate the cabin temperature especially when it's not all that cold out.

We put wood in the stove about 8:30 at night and again around 8:30 - 9:00 in the morning. Waking up to 60-65° is sweet!

Hard to put a price on a good night's sleep.
Everyone has to decide during these builds where (Cheap out) so to speak.
For us, we found it difficult to look for savings in the critical infrastructure and when our temps easily hit -40
a good wood stove was at the top of the list. Blaze King stoves are worth the price hands down.

I put a Blaze King Princess in my 20x32, two story camp in Downeast Maine 3 years ago and I could not be happier. I'm off-grid and when I go to camp to ice fish in Feb and March I plan to arrive by early afternoon, start a roaring fire and the camp will be up to temp in 3-4 Hours. We load the stove before daylight, go fishing all day and there are always plenty of coals when we get back.

Hi Princelake, we’re on the Bruce Penninsula and just bought an older Elmira stove for 250. Those stoves are legendary in Ontario And heats our 1000 sq cabin easily...rated for 1250 sq ft I believe.
What I like about ours is the double back wall....so minimum clearance required.i put hardwood in before bed and still have rich coals burning in the morning 8 hours later.
Cheers.

A post on Facebook this morning by a friend of mine:

I don't frequently get to show up to a warm cabin.
19 hours ago I put some wood in the stove, turned down the fresh air intake, and shut the cabin down for the night.
Showed up this morning to a 60 degree cabin, opened the air intake, and instantly had flames.
Gotta love that #BlazeKing life.
I may throw some wood in the stove in a few hours, maybe...
As a buddy said when describing Blaze Kings, you pay once and hurt once.
