Well.... I was done with projects for the year (other than the water trailer skis... more on that next week), but..... the weather has been so good that we got a jump on next Spring's projects.
Day 1, Hired a local guy to come up and help me dig the holes for the piers, 6 holes ~3' deep. An all day project in this rocky, nasty soil.
Day 2, Neighbor came up and along with my wife, we set the pier posts, got the main rim joist in place and a lot of the joist in place.
Day 3, Neighbor and his wife came up and helped us and before sundown it was pretty much finished!
Still have to finish screwing down the decking... most of that is done though. So next spring we will put up 5 x 8" peeled logs to hold a 2 sided log beam to support rafters to cover the main portion of the deck. We got the logs cut a week ago for that. Then of course railings...
Edit.... and log siding around the deck. Replace the window with a 5' slider... move the window to the left.
Anyone have pictures of rustic railings they want to share? We don't like the railings on our back deck and we're thinking goat panels.... 4" heavy wire panels.... trapped between an upper and lower 2x4, but sure open to other ideas. Would love lodgepole pine pole railings but no lodgepole in our area.

Railings? I like it the way it is 
If you fall off the edge the snow you shovel off it will soften the fall.

If we ever get any! We are at 9500', within site of the Continental Divide and about 20-30 miles SE of Wolf Crrek pass yet barely a skiff so far.
A month from now I may be wishing for bare ground!

If you use the wire panels. You can break up the monotony of them by taking small willow branches or really any branches off whatever trees you have around. And attach them to the panels with thin craft wire, or whatever.
I did that with some regular fence rails in our
patio area. It also gave a path for ground cover vines that we planted, to latch onto. One year we planted Cardinal Vines that looked pretty cool. I will see if I can find a couple pics.

Here's a couple pics of the cardinal vine when they took over the grandkids gnome tree. The pic shows when they first started bloom. When they really get going. There are hundreds of red flowers.....hundreds.
This year we got some sweet potato vines and a couple others. One was called the ace of spades, another was called something or other that had dark leaves and some pink to purple color in the middle of the leaf.

Nice! Looks tropical, we are wondering if we can even get grass to grow! Dug out in front of the cabin and used the overburden to build a side yard.... the ground is pretty sterile. A friend with a farm is going to bring us a couple of loads of rotted cow manure mixed with river silt so that will help. I like the twigs tied to the wire idea! The 4" goat panels are effective and to code but pretty industrial looking.
Paulz... We are over 3' off the ground so going to try to bring it to code meaning, basically so no little kids can fall off! Your's looks great though!
Here is what we're thinking but.... not 100% liking it.

For the railing what about rebar or copper pipe vertical connected by drilling out a 2x4 on the top and bottom?

Or much cheaper 'whatever pipe' with a faux verdigris paint job

Wire panels like that usually fail code because the horizontal bars easily allow little hands and feet to climb it.

Silverwater.... that's nice, similar to what I did in my Oregon log home. Unfortunately no lodgepole near us. I could go cut and peel a bunch of aspen poles... a lot of work!

I have +80' of railing to build so it will all match. Copper would be sweet but costly... rebar would work as long as it didn't look too industrial as well. Thanks for ideas!
ICC... our local inspector is fine with the goat panels, 4" squares with no more than a 4" gap under the bottom board. Indeed it can be climbed...

Yeah, inspectors can exercise the option to "not see" something and let it pass an inspection. Passing inspection with something like that in place does not mean that the project detail is to code though. That is why I point at things like that. The inspector here would likely not tag that here on a remote cabin but might not let it slide by in a more developed area. He's been in the job since the mid-'80s and it has been an interesting education studying his red tags over time and from project to project.

Three days hard work peeling logs, 2 siding 12' logs, standing the uprights, then the getting those 2 sided log beams in place (a 6'7" friend was a big help!) And then the rafters cut and placed.... whew! Still need to finish nailing off the hangers and hurricane clips on the outboard ends. I'll get the skip sheeting up today the I have to wait for the metal... it's ordered but won't get it until next Thursday.
The bad news.... snow Monday night/Tuesday, likely not much.... then again sometime between next Thursday and Saturday and forecast to be a good dump. They're say clear after that for nearly a week. Just got to get one good dry day.... and dry feet, and we can get the roof on. Fingers crossed!

A tenon in the bottom to eliminate lateral movement then 4 x 10" timber lock screws that go through the deck boards into the double 2x6 rim joist.

Supposed to be a bit of snow tonight, a skiff, then start snowing in earnest Thursday afternoon and Friday. They are talking 10" - 20" .... So called the metal company this morning and pleaded with them to get my metal rolled quickly so I can get it up before it snows. They were really understanding and said they would rush it through and I can pick it up tomorrow afternoon! Got two friends coming Wednesday to help us get it installed.

My wife and I got back from town with the metal about 1:30 yesterday (Tuesday) and decided to see if the 2 of us could at least get it started, squared up and ready to finish when help arrived Wednesday. We'll, by 4:30 it was all up and screwed down! I was unsure if my wife could hand the 10' sheets up by herself.... she handled it like a boss! Shee shoved them up the ladder and I grabbed them and pulled them up. We finished the trim this morning just as the first snowflakes started to fall.... wind had kicked up and it was getting really cold. Glad to be done and off the roof! Snow is coming down now!

Got the deck finished just in time! Got a full 12" of snow overnight and it's still trying to add a few more... supposed to clear off later in the day and get cold tonight. Forecast is -9/-15F brrr!

Back to work finishing the new west side deck. Got the log siding up and stained last week. Now we are building log railings. Sure seemed a lot easier in my 20's - 30's when I was building log homes....

Got the really dangerous end railings up first. Neighbors have two boys that are "all boy" they scared me last fall when they had to go peer over the edge....
