very strange paul..If I go to my profile and click on the addy that shows under "member", I get an email compose window pop open. If I fill in a test subject and send it it comes in right away. I see it in the gmail account and a split second later it appears in the account it gets forwarded to. I also receive emails at that address from others, such as the small cabin forum admin/owner in the past week or so. Odd.

No undeliverable returns getting back to you?

No undeliverable messages here. I'm copying your email addy to AOL, it doesn't pop up automatically. Just tried sending another one.

I have emailed GCrank1 before this way and it worked.

Changes to the IRS minimum reporting threshold in 2022
The IRS is lowering the Form 1099-K reporting threshold. Starting on January 1, 2022, IRS regulations require all businesses that process payments, including online marketplaces like eBay, to issue a Form 1099-K to sellers who receive $600 or more in gross payouts. If you receive more than $600 in gross payouts over the course of the 2022 calendar year, we’ll provide a Form 1099-K to you by January 31, 2023. Your 2021 tax obligations aren’t affected by this change.

If you haven’t already given us your Social Security Number (SSN), Employer Identification Number (EIN), or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN), we'll ask you to provide it once you reach $600 in sales. This information is required for all sellers with sales over the threshold amount ($600 for 2022). If you don't provide us with an SSN, EIN, or ITIN, your payouts will be put on hold, and we may deduct backup withholding from future payouts.

Still nothing. I know nobody else with an aol email so can't have them check. So I signed up on aol. My test to my gmail from aol does not go through.

So send me an email at aol.com using the same name as the gmail account, but leave out the 2 "dots" and use @aol.com as the domain.

Done.

Yeah, still on AOL, lol. Actually their email app works pretty well, at least for me. I still have some diskettes too.

I was a big fan of Amazon early on and was happy to switch my purchasing there, but it seems in the last 5 years or so both the quality of items has fell off a cliff, and the pricing is far less attractive than it used to be.

For us even Amazon Prime takes 5-7 business days for delivery, so the convenience factor isn't huge. The selection is good, but again quality is a crapshoot. If I hunt, I can tend to find things around town for the same price or less.

I have actually been returning to eBay as of late, as I am able to snipe some pretty good deals I can't otherwise find.

Very weird goings on paul.

I never received any email from you at the gmail or the new aol account.

This AM (about 10) I retested, sending from my aol to my gmail and CC'd to myself at aol. That worked.

I repeated that just now.... used my aol to send a test to myself at AOL with a CC to my gmail. It took the email system about 4 minutes and both showed up.

Here is a screenshot of the address info's. I'll delete that image after you signify you read and double checked where yours were addressed to.

OK. I typed the item # into ebay and found the amal float bowl extensions. Put them in the cart and at checkout I do see that ebay is going to collect tax ($4.07). That answers that question.

The mystery is still why the email system screws up sometimes.

The email system makes no sense at all. Yet another trial from my aol to only my gmail this time. $ minutes for it to arrive at gmail and be forwarded to the final destination.

Could they be going into a spam folder?

I've been poking around at this Ebay 1099 thing and as far as I can tell everyone is subject to the post $600 1099. And not just Ebay, any Paypal, Venmo sale.

So let's say I buy a new saw at HD. I pay sales tax, they pay income tax on the sale. Two years later I get a better saw and sell the old one online. Uncle Sam gets sales tax again, and i have to claim it as income. We take the standard deduction so there is no deducting cost basis, depreciation, travel or what have you.

I think it's been mentioned that prior to 2022 the limit was $20K, much more realistic for small time sellers. Of course legally we are obligated to claim the income anyway, just like selling on CL or a flea market or yard sale.

Well that is embarassing. I looked in the spam folders in my main email client... where everything gets forwarded. I did that first thing when your emails never showed up.

I just now opened the gmail page and dug down to the spam folder there. I found 4 emails. Only 4. Your three Paul and my first that I sent from the newly opened aol acct.

My subsequent aol sends went through, but the 3 from paul @aol stuck in gmail spam box. No other spam there at all.

Re the topic of this thread....

I have no problem with people who are selling lots of stuff having to report income. That is like a business. I have family and friends who operate small businesses online like that. But having to report the selling off of one's old personal unwanted stuff strikes me as wrong. And reducing the allowed $$ is backwards, as prices go up.

As for the sales taxes, the reason for starting to collect sales taxes for online sales goes back to the tax loss to states and local governments. I know from first hand experience in a small municipality here how much that cost the town. Many things suffered. I got over the fact that I had to begin paying sales tax on online purchases.

But it irks me when taxes start to be collected for what is basically a garage sale. Even the IRS does not expect taxes to be paid on your garage sale items. However, IF one is buying items with an eye to making a profit on resale, that changes the game.

I think we need an allowance made when selling items that were personal belongings and no longer needed or wanted. There is a difference between selling with profits first in mind and selling stuff that has been used and not needed. Better than tossing it in the trash, but the Corporate America would rather you and I toss what we don't use and buy something new from their company.

Meanwhile cut the tax rates for the wealthy while we not-so-wealthy try to reclaim a little cash on selling some old stuff that many consider junk.

My state does not demand that people submit taxes from their own garage sales. Was the item purchased by the seller for personal use, or was it purchased for the purpose of selling it and making money, should be the criteria.

Glad you found the email problem.

I agree with everything you said. It should be a hot topic in the online sales world, I'll sure be keeping my eyes open for any additional info.

Ironically, after selling off the last of my project bikes this year, I told myself I needed to sell off all these leftover parts. If I had started back then I'd of been done by now. I had seen ramblings about this upcoming change but didn't know it was for sure. Last day or two I have been calling around my old buddies, might be able to off everything with private sales. Won't get as much dough but also no dealing with packing, shipping etc..

That is why having receipts to be able to prove a capital gain or loss is going to become important. Yes, you will likely have to be filling the proper irs form(s); how else would they be able to sort out the small garage sale guy from the online marketer.
After a lifetime of acquiring Im in the same position of slowly trying to thin the herd, and receipts are few. I had been thinking of registering on E-bay to do some listing this winter, but not now. Im wanting to see way more 'clarification' on this before I jump in this pond.

Well, the $600 per marketing site seems clear. Just don't sell more than the $600 per selling site; not that there are many to choose from.

I do have receipts for just about anything that was purchased for the ranch because that would get expensed/depreciated for income tax purposes. Those never realize a profit when sold off. Whatever I bought, knowing I was keeping it personal, well, those receipts were seldom kept unless a bigger item. And I prefer CL with local or close enough buyers and cash only, no checks, no credit. And cash to the bank in amounts small enough to raise no eyebrows.

Ebay used to let buyers pay by check or money order, don't know anymore. Last motorcycle I sold I got a Paypal deposit and the rest by check. I believe it's only the Paypal/Venmo payments that trigger the 1099, but I could be wrong.

I just bought something on Ebay. In addition to Paypal, which I always use, it gives me the option to pay by credit card. So if you sell and only give that option, would it get reported? Asking for a friend.

Remember they are wanting your banking institution to report any cash deposits or withdrawls over $600(?).
Iirc it was in the BBB bill that failed to pass?
Bottom line is they are incrementally catching up with the 'cash/underground' economy of everyday Americans along with the truely illegal trade.
Al Capone wasnt sent to prison for all the 'real crime', it was for 'tax evasion'.

I don't take personal or cashiers checks or money orders of any kind from anyone unless I know them well enough to know where they live. They are simply too much hassle when they turn out to be bogus. Probably related to why ebay does not do checks anymore.

I have used Zelle for a few transactions but with strangers and in-person deals, I follow my no checks, cash only rule. If shipping from me or to me I always use Paypal or Google Pay with strangers, as PP and GP have fraud protection if you follow the rules that are laid out. I have made a few claims over many years with Paypal and they have never given me any trouble with the requested paybacks.

The credit card option on Ebay is just that, an option for those who don't have Paypal or want to avoid Paypal for whatever reason. The money is still being handled by Ebay so I am certain sales taxes will still be collected and the sales amounts will be tracked and count towards the $600.
I don't actually sell much stuff except maybe once a year if a friend or family member is doing a yard sale and we team up. I sell some small electronics parts to a few people met on a forum or two. Mostly I am buying. Those are always Paypal transactions so I guess it is possible I could receive a 1099K some year if I go crazy and sell a bunch of stuff, but I have not come close to $600 coming to me in any year I can remember.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Banking deposits (or withdrawals) of all types over $10,000 have to be reported to the IRS on a special form by the banking entity since sometime in the 70's IIRC. This $600 ebay/paypal/venmo, etc thing is on sales. Two different things as I understand it. Paypal friends&family transactions are not covered by the new $600 rule.
I guess I am the unusual one I sometimes think I am. I have somewhere between $40 and $200 cash in my wallet. No real idea how much. I haven't pulled money out to buy anything with cash for over 2 or 3 months and that was to feed the self-pay at a forest service campground. For my everyday life, I am the cashless guy using plastic or e-pay via my phone.
I dont do bills by auto-pay, I do not want anything going wrong with 'access Ive given'. So paper checks are a regular thing, a few pretty much every week.
Specific to the question, last Sun morning.
Property taxes, insurance by check. I find negotiating through the various web sites to pay by electronic more of a hassle than writing a check and putting it in the envelope provided.
Many articles popping up on this 1099 thing. Some say, as ICC mentioned, 'commercial' payments or 'Ebay stores'. What constitutes that I'm not sure of. But it does seem clear that paypal friends and family are not reported. I don't have Venmo, don't know if it has the same.
My county has a great online system for property taxes; everything from checking the GIS mapping and seeing who owns what, all the way through filing a protest and paying what is due. I can even set up payments to be made months in advance of the due date and the system processes the payments as I directed. One e-check can be "written" to cover the amounts due on several separate parcels if you want. So, one fee instead of 5, 6, or whatever.
I believe there is at least as great a chance of someone doing paper sourced fraud (stealing mail that has bank or credit info) and causing one grief as there is of someone performing online sourced problems.
We have been using autoplay systems for paying bills where they have been available for decades. Never had any problems associated with that. We/I have changed banks a few times in that interim and changing has never resulted in any problems.
For personal banking, I have not written a paper check for almost 5 years and that was for a car. Ranch business uses some paper for some payroll payees but electronic for most everything else as well.
