Oh my!
When I was a kid we, and most everybody, had lawn chairs, many those old metal clam-shell backed type, and picnic tables. We would move them around and about the yard depending on if we wanted sun, shade, breeze or not. The whole yard was available for the lawn chairs.
Then somebody 'invented' deck chairs; apparently they could only be used on decks 'cause decks started popping up everywhere......

I built my deck so I could support the deck stain industry.
Next time Ipe or composite.

We are surrounded by Mom, by the Grace of God, but our ground around the house is not level or much use without decks; thus 2.5 sides of the house have them.
At the cabin the glacial till and ancient meteorite pulverized sand and lime support only frail flora. Give much traipsin' back and forth and it dies. So a deck.
Given the small house (940sf) and cabin (384sf) the decks only marginally increase the footprints, so no massive loss of exposed earth.
As to that huge deck....maybe the owner Hates mowing lawn?
Me? Id rather mow than stain/treat decks!

The project shown used Ipe as the decking boards. Very dense, very hard, insect, and rot-resistant. They used Penofin Penetrating oil. It soaks in, what doesn't soak in after a few hours is wiped up. Repeat in 12 to 24 months; no scrapping or prep other than a wash with soapy water and let dry. We have used it, but not on anything close to that $ize. I like it better than lawn mowing. Something for everyone.

That definitely is a massive deck!! I'd like to know what it cost
I'm a fan of large decks. I have 3 in my back yard totaling about 600 sq ft. I also have a 600 sq. ft. deck at our 750 sq. ft. cabin.

Mine is 20x30, twice the size of my cabin. Since I'm on a steep hillside it's mainly just to add flat ground!

20' x 28' for our deck, plus an extra 4' x 10' by the sunroom. I don't think it's too big:
