I have a Humphrey propane wall light in a cabin I bought. What would cause the mantle to burn black? I tied on a new mantle and did the pre burn. Lite the light later and it slowly turned black, all but the very end by the time I turned it off. I didn't use a Humphrey mantle, i hade a new mantle from the hardware store. Could there be another reason for this burnout/

The mix is rich, too much gas or not enough air?

yup, a little rich. Should be an adjustment between the knob and the mantle you can turn to open the small air vents to add more air. Play with it until you get the brightest burn.
That carbon will burn off, the mantle is fine.

It could be the size of your mantle causing the need for adjustment if its not the same as the one you had before.

There is not any way to adjust the air.

So, its a light in a cabin you bought and you have never seen it burn right?
Could be it has 'issues'; or who knows what prev was done to it.
If this is the case, you need to ID just what model it is, find info on it, make sure it is 'all there' and, well, basically start at the beginning.

What model gaslight?

Did you also clean the ceramic mantle holder? Are you useing a preformed mantle or not? Is the holder correct for the mantle?

so 2 things. If it burnt cleanly before, your mantle that you replaced it with is the wrong size. But you should be able to adjust the air flow.

If its the style of this picture, if I remember correctly, (haven't messed with mine in years), you have to take the cover that is against the wall off to get to the flow adjust. If there is not adjustment then that cover actually adjusts the flow. If needs to be on correctly.

And it could be as simple as a spider web in the line, blow everything out, make sure the orifice is clear (poke a small needle in it).

I'd clean everything, get the right mantle and I'm sure you will be fine.

I have similar lights and if you think you need different mantles, let me know. I can post where I got mine from (I think, I just have to dig around to find the source, it has been a few years since I placed an order )

Got it working. I cleaned the bunsen, that didn't do it. Cleaned the orifice, that didn't make a difference. I found a larger mantle at the Amish hardware, bingo! I now have light. Thanks!

excellent, and know you know how to trouble shoot any issues you may have with them in the future.

Surprised there is no mixture adjustment on the base, I have 8 lights like that with little sliding gates that adjust the mixture.
