Hello small cabin forum😀 nicalisa here from the interior of BC. I hope that you all are happy healthy and keeping well. I last posted here in 2016. That was the year we left our off the grid cabin on the Sunshine Coast after an untenable situation with a mentally ill neighbour and bought a small off the grid run down cabin in the interior. Lots of time has passed, our kidlet’s have grown up and we have kept working every year on our happy place on the lake. We have sold the little house on the coast after the situation stabilized as I could not imagine going back up there, and we moved on with our new lake house named the loonie bin for the constant call of the loons…as well as the occupants! I will share with you all the pictures and progress as we moved through the renovation. The project is a 400 sq feet panabode that was in very rough shape to start. It is now a fun and funky space😀 the pictures are of the original cabin and my last picture of the boys before we left the coast. It will give some perspective of the boys in the later pictures!

So my last post in 2016 shared the before and after of the mud room turned kitchen. Given the 16x24 one room cabin it just made so much more sense to have the main living space and two small bedrooms and put the kitchen in the mud room as I am the family galley slave. It was such a fun room to do chalk painting, tile remnants, baking paint on mason jars and crate cupboard creations. When we first came in there were scary antique tools hanging on the wall. Very American gothic. We named the room dexters kill room. Now it is the room where culinary masterpieces are created!

One of the first things we did after buying it was get a bin and take out the trash. We did the demo, saved what we could (awesome find a lure that the fish love, and antique manual beaters for cakes😀). We were left with two twin beds for the kids, a futon for us and hubby put a plywood counter on the front porch so I could cook out there. After I learned what boards I could walk on to get there as the deck was rotting out! We also hooked up a makeshift shower on the front deck. Spoiler alert, that shower features into the window install story later in the Reno😀 ps did I mention why we bought this particular cabin? It was so about the view!

Rotten wood really sucks. We had a ton of wet rot, dry rot and nasty wood patches. In the end we repaired the boards we needed to and then do an opaque stain inside and out and went with a lake blue theme. We knew we would build in natural wood as we moved forward. Plus with the low roofline in the back and dark tar smoke stained ceilings a nice bright white would give such a nice light feeling. How many coats of white stain does it take to cover a ceiling? 5. Brushed on over the tongue and groove and one fall off of the ladder and a concussion later…then the ceiling was done!

Well done, you are making this into a HOME and not just a house or cabin but something with feeling & love in it... I'd wager a fair bit of blood sweat & tears blended into it as well. That VIEW, indeed a choice one without a doubt.

So speaking of the lake view…..if you can see the lake, people on the lake can see you too! So while my husband was installing all new windows in the cabin, with screens which is swoon worthy in mayfly season. I was having a great shower after staining wood all day on the front deck and had the shower curtain around me on the front deck. my dear hubby was putting in the largest most impressive window to the cabin. Also on the front deck. The window started slipping and he urgently called for help which had me running to him out of the shower naked as a jay bird to hoist up the window and hold it in place while he levelled and put in the 4 set screws. As I turned around to run back to the shower I looked down to see two fishermen in an aluminum boat looking up….needless to say on a lake with only 15 cabins and one small fishing camp of regulars that park their RV there every season this is STILL the talk of the tiny town….usually starts with, well the things you see around here sometimes are just amazing! The windows however are great! Needless to say the only photo attached is of the new windows😀

Gravol…. You know you have a problem when you need to take gravol to be inside your cabin. Honestly it was almost like a trampoline with beams every 8 feet and no other framing lol. With the floorboards being 1 inch thick, you got a lot of pep in your step! So there was a full clean out of under the cabin and braving of the spiders and the installation of an actual foundation. Having a 12 year old at the time we taught him to use a drill for the very back where only he could squeeze into. We then were able to rip off the collapsing deck and start the replacement process!

Ok question of elimination… who on gods green earth puts carpet into the outhouse?? When we bought this cabin I had never seen a worse outhouse in my life. And I know outhouses having been a peace corps volunteer…I built many a lovely biffy. I wish I had a before pic. I will ask my hubby he might have one. Honestly I spent as little time in this place as I could preferring to cop a squat by a tree. But to save further potential embarrassment of mooning a neighbour I put my efforts into making a more appropriate place to go. First I installed the black pvc pipe from in the hole to above the roof to draw out the odour so it didn’t come up into the outhouse. I had a pump truck come in to remove the accumulation of stuff. I ripped out the carpet (wearing a full hazmat suit with respirator!) and removed some boards for a window. I mean it is all about the view even when you have to go. Then I washed down all of the walls and floor, painted, installed a hand washing sink and plexi window. Some stainless penny tiles and a chalkboard to record your deep thoughts as you go and we had a comfy spot!

The naked story reminds me of something that happened the other summer. It is quite warm at times, and no A/C so I run around the cabin in my boxer shorts. The neighbor mentioned he might stop over to see my cabin, but didn't mention that he'd have his daughter with him...

Lol, at least yer mom got you to wear underwear!
Years back at an historical event a good friend wore his loincloth to take a dip in the river of a Hot day.
Suddenly he felt the string let go and the current swept away the already abbreviated garment. He reached for it to no avail.....
There was no way he could accend from the river any other way than how he came into this world.
Then he saw the police cruiser coming.....

The shower room

given the amount of work we were doing the room to shower in was so important. and while it is not quite done yet (have to do the cedar plank on the wall) it has become a decidedly nice place to clean up! again used extra leftover tile from craigslist, some cheap crates, left over flooring and some shed windows. Plus the bonus is that the tongue and groove plank from the deck that was not rotted we used as a ceiling we have an ecotemp L10 on demand hot water heater that my husband says is what separates us from the beasts. lol. nothing better than a hot shower at the end of a day!!

The main living and dining area. All furniture was either free or nearly free on marketplace or Craigslist. Chalk paint became my best friend….and the tools were from the creepy kill room that became the kitchen.
