: I expect the E-85 would be even less 'powerful' than the std eth-blend reg at 10%

There is a performance advantage though. I have a friend with a very much modified WRX . He can dial up the turbo pressure at will. E85 is the ideal fuel. E85 has a high octane rating...105 or so. Available at a gas station near you. With about 35 psi boost , E85 and the other mods it has dynoed at just under 600 hp at the wheels.

the market sets the price

Just like all the commodities on the stock market, and the market is worldwide.

That is sorta true for his performance engine, but in reality it would be better if the ethanol came from sugar cane as in Brazil. Sugar cane produces at least twice the amount of ethanol per acre than corn. I actually never fully agreed with growing motor fuel, at least not with corn

But all much of this country can grow is corn.....
It is going to get interesting this year for farming, big and small, with diesel fuel up so high and iirc ag stuff for fields 3-4x higher than last. Losing money to grow corn and make ethanol cant last.

Also, beet, another good source.
The corn for fuel is not used for eating, its called dent or feed corn (for livestock) and not the human eating kind. When all farms move to dent corn, these crops displace eating crops and drive up the price of food. Look into how much energy is used to make a gallon of corn fuel. You'd be surprised.

Through research performed at Cornell University, we know that 1 acre of land can yield about 7,110 pounds (3,225 kg) of corn, which can be processed into 328 gallons (1240.61 liters) of ethanol. That is about 26.1 pounds (11.84 kg) of corn per gallon.
From... https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://auto.howstuffworks.com/f uel-efficiency/alternative-fuels/question707.htm&ved=2ahUKEwjCmO3ky473AhUbD0QIHdakCfk QFnoECBwQBQ&usg=AOvVaw3jFyw3M-J3ytvkl2-SlUWB

Or...
Our conclusion is that, for corn production, farmers use 27,134 BTUs per gallon of ethanol. The most energy-efficient farms use 19,622 BTUs while the state-of-the-art is 14,764 BTUs per gallon.

For reference
Ethanol (E100) 76,330 Btu/gallon
Gasoline 116,090 Btu/gallon

And what the farmer gets per bushel of corn depends on if you are in the first run of trucks to the buyer or anytime later; the first guys get the highest price IF the moisture content is low enough. If it is too high it needs to be dried in big LP rigs, adding to the cost of production.
All to say that farming to make corn to make fuel is Very petroleum intensive (how many trips back and forth across that field from pre-plant thru harvest?) and does not directly relate to the price per gal of ethanol because the price per bushel of corn is so low at sell and final processed fuel price fluxuates.
I cant quote/link a source but iirc if eth production wasnt gov (taxpayer) subsidized it would be too expensive to be on the market?

Starting to feel like living in Europe!

I remember driving over there. Maybe we've just had it too good?

You've probably read today that E15 will be sold this summer, to ease prices. About 10 cents a gallon.

Nooooo.

Nothing I own was designed to run on more than 10% ethanol. Beside not being good for your fuel system or engine, ethanol contains about 60% of the energy that gasoline does. That extra 5% for 10 cents less a gallon isn't saving you anything. If fact, it has the potential to cost you in vehicle repairs.

Add in the fact that the world food supply has been seriously disrupted by Russia's misadventure in Ukraine, and it makes no sense to grow food for fuel. None at all.

Yes, but there is more to that story than what one might think by simply reading those 9 words.

Of course there is, that was just the headline. Didn't post a link since it's on every news site today. Any salient items to point out, I'm all ears.

I'm certainly not advocating using it, I have enough issues with E10 already. And 10 cents a gallon is a drop in the bucket compared to the increases.

Unless the E-15 or E-85 (whatever they are calling 15% eth-blend) can get at least the same mpg it is not more cost effective. So this isnt really going to help folks with their energy costs...is it?
I can choose to drive fewer miles, at a lower, more fuel efficient speed, and I may even jack my tire pressure up to 50psi, but I cant do much come this winter when home heating cost could be.....???

E-15 means it contains 15% ethanol. And yes, your car will get worse mileage burning this than straight gasoline. So while it may be cheaper, you are going to have to buy more of it. Whether you save any money or not depends on both the price of straight gasoline and how much cheaper E-15 is. My feeling is that it isn't going to save most people anything.

Im with NorthRick on this one too. And for the sake of argument.

Lets pretend you did save a teeny bit, all gone in car repairs.
Big corn lobby, displacing food crops.
Its an answer to a question that was never asked.

Personally I don't think his political comments were that overt (based on the 2 I saw), but were more along the lines of observations.

I guess if you are going to maintain that level of scrutiny, I hope you do so consistently.

OK, TMT here, I did not create this username to skirt a ban, I did it for diagnostic purposes.

Paulz, feel free to email me on my original username in here at yahoo dot com if you want to keep in touch. [original_user_name AT yahoo dot com] I check it once a month, but after I see you, we can give you the regular email and we can keep in touch.

Dave, the discussion was on high fuel prices, I was mentioning supply and demand, ie the comments about killing a good chunk of the local production.
OK, I added the sticker, but aside from that, we didnt really discuss politics directly, it was more indirectly. We all know you reduce supply, prices goes up.

OK, you removed the sticker, I never saw your post or warning. I wasnt looking for it, you blend in as a regular user. Honestly, I didnt really consider my reply really political (discussing supply/demand), so its why I was surprised by the whole deal.

I'm not going to grovel or beg, my explanation is above and is fact.

I know my contributions in this forum were valuable, went way beyond just building a tiny cabin, extended to container upgrades, wiring, fabricating, log shelters, landscape, park settings, my ranger uniform, USFS and NP mini museum, foresty etc. I have documented my entire project from just the foundation and a lumber pile to where it is now, no where else have I done that. In fact, I dont even have some of those original pictures anymore.

I am headed back to my cabin tomorrow and the plan is to install ceiling fans, pull wire through the conduit, drop some beetle kills, skid them to my log deck, run fenceline, fix winter damage to fence (first trip of the year) and trim low branches with pole saw (Love my Dewalt Pole saw)

I will take pictures of the shelter lit up at night with fans (hope blades are not too long and hit rafters.

I will come back and sign into my account under my old user name, its either going to work or its not. If it does, great, I will upload pictures with commentary, if it doesnt, then its been fun guys. And for those who want to see photos, you have my email address.

I filled up a 5 gallon juggo of gas the other day. The pic I am posting, is not what I experienced. I ran across it in the web. But I did pay $21.95.
