Got a tank, the rusty one, that won't seal up. I'll exchange it but should I be looking for the style on the other tank?

I think the nice tank is the current type, but maybe check what new tanks have next time you are in a store selling them.
We have an exchange close by, the fill company recerts the good ones so there is quite a range of ages in use. They are also one of few that actually do 20# in a 20# cylinder! I exchanged for a newish one (look at the date on the collar) that still had about 1.5 years to go from date of mfr, I can get it refilled anywhere now without the 'inspection/recert' fee.
I upgrade my tanks whenever possible. By picking my own exchange tank from the bunker I get the newest style with only the exchange tank price, not having to buy a new tank and fill it.
Btw, the old style POL internal left-hand thread fittings had a big, smooth bull-nose all the way to the end. Do Not use those in the new style with the safety valve, use only the new style POL with the rubber o-ring and the little cylindrical tip (that tip is what pushes in on the valve's internal safety valve. Using the old POL fitting will wreck the valve and those parts are not owner replaceable. Be aware there are new style POL's that still for use the internal thread which is in all the valve assemblies that also have the big, coarse quick-change external thread. They also work in any old-old style too.

I am a Canadian ,so it’s possible we have things different up here ,but the old style is the internal left hand thread valve ,the newer style has a course outer thread ,but up here the 100lb tanks still have the old style coupler .

I remember the internal LH thread couplers. All mine now are the external thread. I think on this rusty tank there is an O-ring deeper inside that seats on the straight part of the coupler, instead of on the ball portion like the other tank.
I found an O-ring that fit in there and it's working with no leaks. It's a full tank so I want to use it before I turn it in.

The old style tanks had internal threads. New ones usually have both internal and external, so they work with anything, but newer devices can't use old tanks without external threads.
Fixed installations still use the internal threads.

Your old one looks like it's got a quad ring style rubber seal? Looks like a square O ring. I had one leak when in use..I looked at the rest of my tanks and all the one that had O rings like that also had cracks. All where also in date. I quickly used and exchanged these tanks.

Yes that's what it has Brett. Time to give all my tanks an inspection. The rest are empty, I went through about 5 this winter, mostly using the wall heater.

Tank refill day today. Found a second 20# tank with that old type of seal. Swapped those 2 out at Ace for $22 per.
Then took my other tanks,one 40#, two 30# and a few 20s to the gas station. $3.89 a gallon. I think I paid $3.50 last year. So not as bad a gas/diesel inflation.
Should get me through to 2023.

I think it is a good thing to upgrade to the newest valves, though I have a couple devices that 'need high flow' and are troublesome on the new valves that think it is a big leak and shut off.....
It can happen on a bbq grill too.

Meant to add that today when my tanks were getting filled in the bed of my pickup, I was standing there BSing with the guy. He opened the bleed valves as they filled, a bit of gas escaped until the point where a whole bunch came out, then shut the valve and the pump. About 6 tanks.
Hopped back in the truck, had a headache for an hour or two.

Paul, my friend, yer not supposed to inhale!
Sounds like ya got the full load in them Keep em in the shade for storage, even use a little off of each as you need to run a 'pane device. No sense having them vent it off useless if it gets really hot.

Thanks, yeah they go in the shipping container under the deck, nice and cool.
I'm just surprised that guy can stand there doing that all day long! Btw right when I pulled up to the station the Amerigas tanker truck guy was just leaving from filling up the station tank. If I had gotten there a bit earlier I wonder if I could have bought it right off the tanker. Cost me $160 total, plus $45 for the two tank I swapped out at Ace. Not bad though for hopefully a years supply.
