Man, I've been looking over prices for lumber and whatnot.

I picked a real bad time to start a new cabin build.

Locally it is worse this year.

My quick reference items are slightly higher than they were at the peak of last year.

2x4x8 - 2021 high =$7.98 / 2022 high =$8.25

There are more but I would have to dig up my price sheet. Suffice it to say most things are ever so slightly above their peak last year - despite the fact that lumber futures are ~30% lower than the peak of last year.

I suspect the retail and big box stores wised up and jacked up prices more, and more quickly this year so they didn't take the short end like last year. Very unfortunate.

Thankfully I bought 90% of my package last August during the slight reprieve we had. Bought nearly everything 50% less than the highs of the year w/ volume discounts..

The worst time to build a cabin was 2020...right when I had planned to. Those plans got canceled and we are waiting things out. Even if it takes a few years we have come to terms with that. I have no desire to pay 3x the price for a cabin that is absolutely not necessary.

The world has gone mad on so many fronts

Reading an article this morning on vehicle prices

In 1 year, these vehicles have increased by;

Jeep Wrangler 2 door - 27%
Ford Maverick - 25%
Jeep Wrangler 4 door - 23%
Jeep Gladiator - 23%

And those are just some examples of a long list of crazy prices!

Right, last time it was lumber worker shortage due to Covid, so they said, and prices came back down.

This time...

2x4x8 SPF Dimensional Lumber $9.98 /7.98 US
2x6x8 SPF Dimensional Lumber $14.78 /11.82 US
2x8x8 SPF Dimensional Lumber $26.68 /21.34 US
1/2"x4'x8' Std Spruce Plywood $68.98 /55.16 US
7/16 4x8 Oriented Strand Board $59.98 /47.96 US

Current Price as of April.1.2021 @ HomeDepot.CA (Ontario Canada)

And let's not forget the Softwood Lumber Duties piled on at the US border which can add 9-21% pending on product going there.

Roofing Tin & Screws along with everything else has all skyrocketed with numerous reasons/excuses... Except the one none mention which is the Record Profits from Gouging... shhhh don't tell anyone... more tax income from higher prices, so look the other way...

Yeah right now lumber is priced at last years peak building time. I bet it only gets worse in a few months which I can’t even imagine what those prices will be. I need electrical, insulation and drywall. I plan to buy now and pick it up when I need it this year.

You want to laugh? Look up the price of plytanium dryply. It's a 3/4in plywood sub floor with a red wax on it to help it be waterproof. It's not PT it's not exterior rated, just a bit of waterproofing for construction purposes. Between 2011-2019 it was no more than $35 a sheet. Now $88 and I have seen it $109.
