Well the 3 months here in AZ have been good.... got some hiking in and hit lots of yard sales. Scored really good prices on all the "stuff" on my shopping list. Got all the tools necessary to build about 150' of lodgepole railings collected/bought, now just have to find the pokes... unfortunately lodgepole doesn't grow in our area.

ICC.... any suppliers for lodgepole down your way?

Xterra, Pickup and trailer are pretty much loaded so about 4-5AM we will be on the road for the 10 hour drive back home. Yep we gave decided to make the cabin/Colorado home since we only spend between 2-3 months here in AZ.

Don't see much lodgepole around here. Ponderosa. What diameter?

Thanks, yeah mostly spruce and Ponderosa up here too.

I'm thinking 2-3" for spindles and 3-4" for rails. I need ~245' of rails and ~645' for spindles. None of them will be over 10' so taper shouldn't be a big issue.

I have a list of several places in Colorado and 1 in NM but just not sure if any will work out yet. I've only spoke to one guy and he wasn't too helpful.

I can't think of a source around here for sections in that size range.

nobadays, in my area, get up around 5000 foot elevation, you will see lodgepoles appear. I know you have elevations in colorado. Spruce also shows up then too. I have lodgepole up in the national forest above me, there is a lake at the 5K mark, around 4500 is when they show up. Lake area is full of spruce, lodgepole and tamarack

I have Tamarac here, it makes pretty sturdy poles tho I doubt as long as Lodgepole. I have some Ive used and left outdoors for at least a decade with no treatment at all. I 'store' them on the deck, not ground, all winter. Bet they would make good rails.

I ended up finding several areas not far from the cabin that we can cut standing dead spruce poles. They have more taper than lodgepole but since nearly all of our runs, with the exception of one will be ~5' plus spindles of ~32" , the taper won't really effect me too much. I am so relieved to find a close source where we can cut them ourselves.
